Oh my G-d I forgot Contra III: The Alien Wars for SNES! Luckily these other homies had my back. Onyxmeth is nuts if he doesn't think there was good co-op back in the day. Try out all the games I listed. There's definitely something for you in there. Good luck.
I forgot about Contra too, and smacked myself upside the head for it, but there's a lot of games there that I don't feel have aged as well as nostalgia remembers it. I just think the multiplayer aspects of these consoles in player vs. player trumps most of the co-op offerings. Just trying to paint a picture that he may have more fun on his trip playing against each other as opposed to with each other.

Bad Dudes (The president has been kidnapped by ninjas. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president?)
Battletoads
Battletoads and Double Dragon
Double Dragon 2
Double Dragon 3
Nightmare on Elm Street (kinda crappy, but has up to 4 player co-op platforming on one screen)
Ninja Crusaders (think like 2 player Ninja Gaiden)
Nintendo World Cup (great Technos soccer)
River City Ransom (this is the one you want, this is the one you want!)
Shadow of the Ninja (think like 2 player Ninja Gaiden)
Super Dodge Ball (great Technos dodge ball)
Super Spike V'Ball (great Technos v'ball)
TMNT 2: The Arcade Game
TMNT 3: The Manhanttan Project

For SNES:

Battletoads and Double Dragon
Final Fantasy 3, aka 6 (2p from the beginning, you each control a couple characters during battles, and you can change at any time, great classic RPG with great soundtrack, in case you have a really long drive)
Legend of the Mystical Ninja (platforming action with towns in between stages to buy items and train and learn info, hilarious plot)
Secret of Mana (2p adventure/RPG after you find the 2nd character)
Troddlers (2p co-op puzzler)
Super Battletoads
Super Double Dragon (if you have a short drive, this whole game's like an hour and really fun)
TMNT: Turtles in Time
Zombies Ate My Neighbors (super sweet amazing classic top-down shooter with assloads of enemies, items, weapons, and zings, full of classic movie monsters and then some, highly recommended)

For Genesis:

Sonic 2 (it's like 1 and a half players, and 2 players for the bonus rounds, I guess you could trade off Sonic? hey it was fun when I was like 8 or so)
Streets of Rage 2 (great beat 'em up with amazing soundtrack)

For N64:

Goemon's Great Adventure (same as Legend of the Mystical Ninja)
Perfect Dark (try all the challenges, I dare you)

CASE CLOSED.

And if any of those aren't fun, I'll give you your money back!

wow thanks a lot man, and to everyone else.  That's quite a list you have there.  And to whoever said knights of the round, i don't think that came out on any consoles, but it does remind me that I also have a full MAME romset as well.  Holy crap there's probably SOOOO many sick arcade co-op beat em ups, but anyways, River City Ransom is a great game I'm glad you reminded me of it, I've beaten a lot of the games mentioned here so far, and River City Ransom I got an hour or so into, but then me and my friend never went back, can't remember why, but that's definantly a consideration.  How far do you have to get in Secret of Mana before you get the 2nd character?

Ah, how could I forget Panic on Funkotron?  Shame on me!

They're both fun as hell, but my brother and I still log hours upon hours of play time on the original Toejam & Earl.  The original is a bit slower paced than Panic on Funkotron, but it works.

@Avalach21, In Secret of Mana you find the 2nd character about 10-20 minutes in.

@XCosMarX, Yeah, Super Smash TV is a sick-ass co-op game on SNES! I seriously think Super Smash TV is the magical link between the old Robotron and today's Geometry Wars. It's like 2 player Geometry Wars, but hosted by the "I'd buy that for a dollar!" guy from Robocop. So sick.

@Onyxmeth, ah, word up. I see what you mean. Well, if they want to compete instead of cooperate, I'm sure they won't have a hard time finding a good game then. I was a nerd for co-op in the early 90's, when I was 7-10 or so. What went wrong with me? Hahaha.
