Using the frontlight model is fine. It's no big deal. However, if you want a certain case to have the 101 backlight, you can transplant the screens. I did that with my NES GBA SP.

Can I buy backlit screens?

You gotta find a used 101 model. That's what I did. 30$. Buy one that's junk. Just make sure the screen is in good shape. Even buy one that's missing the bottom. I wouldn't trust any 3rd party anything. I bought DS Lite replacement shell once. The shit didn't fit any of the parts. As a bonus. I used the old SP screen front light. To backlight my GBC.

It's the model 001 version.

I think it's supposed to be a frontlight or something.

I see. Looks decent enough despite a clear difference in quality. If you save a lot of money by going with the left model, I'd say it's fine.

Some pictures show a bigger difference though.

Ugh. I'm buying a used 001 model because the used 101 models are too expensive! Sure the things themselves are 1-20 dollars, but I ain't paying 70 dollars for shipping plus import costs...

The 101 model was only sold in the US?

No, I own one, but I need another.

No don't get it... the light u can get from lamps or room lights is nowhere near the light quality to brighten up the SP screen fully. Get a VANILLA GBA or keep looking for a SP that works... or just buy a Nintendo DS DSi

I'm also looking for a DS Phat/Lite, but I'm looking for a GBA because I want to play some multiplayer.

You mean a GBA? I've never heard about an SP without backlight.

Anyway, unless you are going to use it mostly at home and have a good light source, you shouldn't get a model without backlight.

It's the model 001 version.

Not really helpful but the game in the image, Golden Sun is simply amazing. Big nods to earlier final fantasy games. A.must play for any GBA gamer!

Get a copy of both games if you can!

Lol, you're telling this to one of the biggest GBA fans on the site. and also one of the biggest Golden Sun fans (;

Retro VGC doesn't seem to be all that useful :/

I owned both models at some point and the one with the frontlight is perfectly fine to play in the dark, but the one with the backlight has a noticeable better quality.
If you don't care that much and saves you a lot of money the frontlit model gets the job done, but after using the backlit model I didn't want to use the other one again
