Forums - General - Contrast Ratio's

For those of you following tv development here are some real numbers.

TVContrast RatioLums Low (cd/m2)Lums High (cd/m2)
Brightside200,000:1.014,000
LCD Westinghouse1000:1.55550
Sony’s OLED1,000,000:1 0600
LCD1000:1 500-600
Plasma* Selling #  800-1000*
Plasma (real world #)  100
CRT  300-500

These are the claim they make for there product. As you can see sony's 1 million to 1 contrast ratio is BS as you can't divide by 0 and Brightside has 3,500 more lums and has a smaller contrast ratio. Some may claim the .01 makes a difference but it doesn't.

Note: plasma TV's don't measure in the usual way and that is why there are 2 numbers. 1 for there bizzare measuring and then the real world numbers.

The westing house is one of the best LCD's out but as you can see still has a fair amount of lums in the dark areas.

And for those who don't know lums is brightness

Hope you enjoy.

I don't know, those OLEDs from Sony look absolutely amazing.

They do there is no doubt but there contrast ratio is BS. but having that pure black does make things look good.

You should see brightside. It's like having the sun inside it's so bright.

1m:1 is realistic as Samsung is making a plasma TV that has a 1m:1 contrast. IF Samsung can do it with a plasma TV an OLED can easily.

I'll make it simple

Dark ...Bright...........Dark/Bright Ratio
0..........4000.............200,000 to 1
0............600..........1,000,000 to 1

Someone explain that to me.

the whole contrast ratio thing in general is BS.

there are no set standards as to how to arrive at a contrast ratio and while the contrast ratio is very important in selecting an HDTV, people put way to much impact on what the number is, because these numbers can be very deceiving.

The only way to decide what TV has the better contrast ratio is litterly to go into Best Buy and see for yourself.

OLED technology gives Sony a 0 for low lums since it is pure black, now while a contrast ratio cannot be derived, the OLED screens are drop dead beautiful and beat the living crap out of high end plasmas right now. If it was possible to get a contrast ratio for them, I have no doubt it would be around 1mil to 1.

I'm not too sure what contrast ratio has to do with anything all i can tell you is that Sony's XBR series TV's are by far the best looking LCD TV's. Go to best Buy and see for yourself, they also look the best out of all the screen shots i have seen of people playing games on them, there is a thread some place on the official Sony forums.
