Is this a common mistake retailers make or was this a fluke, has anyone else seen a game on the shelf before it should be?
It happens sometimes, mostly to low-profile games. Such as Freedom Wars.
EDIT: It happened to Tomb Raider Definitive Edition earlier this year.

And yes I tried buying it but the self check out wouldn't let me, even found someone to try and over ride it...no luck.
I saw soul sacrifice out at target 4 days before release. But I waited and got it really cheap during a digital sale, great game
I bought God of War 2 a day ahead of its release from a Target when it first came out. I don't think it's a common thing though. Especially nowadays.

I can see how it could happen, I just figured the boxes had a 'do not display until ___' sticker.
