But what does that mean? What's the benefits? I'm quite unfamiliar with hacking, so I don't really know/understand the benefits of hacking a console? I'm guessing they're trying to hack it so they can play pirated games or something?

This, and homebrews. More spefically emulators. I don't know if many people know that, but the PSP is a powerful portable emulator, capable of running games from virtually every single console up until the SNES/Genesis (plus the PS1 obviously).

The Vita and PS4 would offer much more possibilities on that regard. But piracy is the most sought out feature I believe.

Well, technically, emulating games is a piracy too...

Contrary to what some self righteous people may tell you, all hacks are about playng pirated games. And a hack that gets pirates into the system proper will basically mean custom firmware that will allow features and apps that sony doesn't support. Basically you would be able to play almost any game as long as you are wiling to not carry your console online.

Problem with hacks like these though is that they never last. Everytime you see a "stability update" they would be fixed. Which in turn limits the amount fo people that really ever has them. Actually in this dy and age and with the only wy to play online being a paid service, teher is very little gain in hacking a console.

Aaah that's what I thought; piracy. Weird name actually for downloading an illegal copy of a game... Piracy is all about sailng the seas and raping and pillaging. I would imagine that most "pirates" sitting at home (in their moms basement) is everything but what an actual pirate is all about :P thanks for the info!

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Meh, technically it is. And you could argue that you can buy old games through Virtual Console/PSOne Classics and whatnot. But I wouldn't call emulators as something harming the industry.

Not to mention, emulators (and piracy really) are preserving gaming's history. I digress.

Homebrews? Is that the same thing as playing emulators? So hacking a console means that you can more or less play any game you want on that console, and not only pirated games from the interwebs? Thanks for the info =)

Homebrew = unofficial software made by nerds in their free time.

And theoretically, it means just that (keeping in mind the hardware needs to be able to handle the emulated system. I assume the PS4 would be able to emulate everything up until the Gamecube, plus the Wii, minus the original Xbox). But you obviously need to wait for someone to develop the emulators for it. Given the PS4's popularity, I'd imagine it would be a matter of time for those to appear, once it's properly hacked (if ever).

The Vita seems to have a somewhat strong cult following... I'm not sure.

Wouldn't it be easier to hack and play everything on/for PC? Wouldn't a PC be able to play PS4 games as well?

B-b-b-but there's no piracy on console!!!!

Dolphin is very Cpu intensive and doesn't have superb multithreading support. While I have no doubt with enough time a GC/Wii emulator can show up on the PS4, it would have to be a brand new emulator that takes advantage of the PS4s cores, otherwise the Cpu just has too weak non-threaded performance.
