Forums - General - Should I buy a Mac?

I currently own a modern desktop PC with Windows Vista and Ubuntu 7.10. Despite the fact I don't need it, I am looking at possibly buying a Macbook based on how pretty it looks and also because I've never tried Mac OS X and I'd like to have some knowledge in addition to Windows and Linux use. A laptop would be useful for mobile computing, but I don't know how many reasons there are to buy a Mac in particular, especially due to the additional expense. I am serious about buying one despite my existing preference for Linux.

What features or programs would I find (I am very attracted to shiny and innovative interfaces, so please describe the best parts) about a Mac that I could not easily get on Windows or Linux? I would buy an iPod or iWork if those are neccesary to use the full potential of the Mac. I do not use my computer for gaming; I can program a little and listen to some music but do not do any serious audio, video or image editing. Innovative uses of the internet are good.

What disadvantages are there of using a Mac? I don't need to use specific branded programs, but are there any general limitations?

Can you describe the desktop experience and how it differs from Windows and (if possible) Linux?

Should I buy a Mac?

Ubuntu. Linux for human beings.

If you are interested in trying Ubuntu or Linux in general, PM me and I will answer your questions and help you install it if you wish.

Don't do it! Linux needs as many users and advocates as possible. You've grown used to open software, now you want to go to closed proprietary software and hardware?!

Keep your current Linux setup and spend the money you save on games and lapdances. That's what I'd do.

Ubuntu 64-bit user.

No.

But for those who do there is always bootcamp :P

If the Mac OS doesn't have a feature or feature set you want or need, do not buy it.

It is exactly like buying a gaming console.

If it doesn't have games that interest you, don't buy it simply for the sake of having it.

I wouldn't ditch Ubuntu or anything like that; it would be my main PC still. I want to try something different, and be that evil and proprietary it'll have to happen ...as long as someone comes up with something I can't have on Ubuntu.

"But it's shiny!"

I know; I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to a unique feature that may interest me.

OSX is cool to play with. I think if you're into computers and technology you *HAVE* to have one... just to see what the other side of the fence is like! Why limit yourself to just linux?

I have a macbook pro and a mac mini... i like 'em both, but i also have 4 linux boxes plus an eee pc a XO (olpc) etc.. they're all great to use. Oh.. and i got linux loaded u on the ps3 also..

so drawback, it costs money. Other than that they're great.

And if you don't like osx, you can always install linux on that too!

Set no limits, buy all tech!

That's the problem.  If you feel you need someone to convince you to buy something, you shouldn't be buying it.

I wouldn't get a Mac, PC is more PC :)

Nope, if it did have any features that made it unique i'm sure Microsoft would've copied it. ;)
