No, the 3870x2 is a Crossfire card. He is using two of these, for a Quad-Crossfire setup.

Seems underpowered then. My mobo will take 4 pci-x cards in a quadfire formation, so in theory I could use 4 3870x2 cards, no?

^In theory you could... as long as the chipset, drivers and PCI-E bandwidth can handle it, which is unlikely.

and since the 3870x2 doesnt support PCIe2 its definitely unlikely. PCIx16 does not have enough bandwidth.
This is NVidia's ace in the hole. PCIe2.0 will allow 4x 9800GX2 which will make one hell of a system + the 790i chipset will hep too.
