This is a double edged sword, absolutely; On one hand, you just bought your glossy new next-gen console and it deserves to have cutting edge software to support it. What we all know is that currently, no cross-gen games take full advantage of the PS4's or X1's horsepower and they're being restricted to some degree by their last generation counterparts.
I see a lot of people complaining about this, and it makes sense.
But let's take a look at the other side of this arguement. Essentially everyone complaining about multiplats being (for the most part) cross gen up to this point are basically lamenting the fact that our beloved PS3's and 360's are still being supported; Is this REALLY such a bad thing!? The length of the 7th generation is unprecedented for sure! But not even 10% of 7th gen owners have made the leap yet so why is it that that <10% of current gen owners are so vocal about nuking the remaining support we're still getting for our outdated hardware? We've all heard the term 'Respect your elders' but more importantly, remember where you came from!
There are a few disadvantages you employ by adopting early; The first that pops into my head is price, of course, while the next major hurdle regards software. No, we are not seeing full software support yet. This is a balancing act - Why would Sony or MS cater 100% to an install base of less than 10 million when they still have a loyal >80 million potential users to rake in sales? It just doesn't make sense on your part, oh consumer. The first year is absolutely a transitioning stage and quite frankly, I'd be pretty disappointed in leaving no surprises left when we get our first announcement of, "Title X maxes out all available resources on console Y, after we've optimized engine Z to the full extent. This is the best we got". Is that really what you want one year in? You adopted early, you (probably) knew this would happen, now you need to be patient and wait because you can be certain this generation will be ground-breaking yet; Many new prospects are on the horizon with the rise of the internet, and features that were being toyed with previously are being expanded upon now.
Honestly I'm just a little irked that some of you complain about cross-gen when it's actually a good business practice to support legacy hardware with a massive install base.
/Pointless Rant
