Forums - PC - Shitty PC, trying to make it suck less

Ok I'm mainly a console gamer; the last time I had a gaming quality pc was when vampire the masquerade: Redemption came out. Anyway I got a new computer in 2005 because my old shit box crapped out on me. It was an emachines t3990 which came with as you might expect pretty low grade parts but hey it was cheap and the cpu could be worse I guess. There was one problem however the ram they gave was defective and instead of being 256 it was like 238. So recently it started becoming a problem and  so I ordered a gig of ram but one my friends said I shouldn't both of them in my Computer at the same time because my 256 will slow the other one down. It that true?

BTW if people are wondering how I play games that require pixel shader I use a program called 3D Analyze.

emachine it is impossible to fix without building an entire new PC

What about the ram question?

256 is not enough for most systems. usually windows xp will eat most of that just by itself...
the ram should only slow your new ram down if they are different speeds. (ram has a MHZ rating in addition to the capacity rating)

^no it wont

That PC doesn't even has an AGP port. It's an old socket 478 system with normal DDR RAM. You can't get much for it that can increase performance other than, like you said, RAM. As long as it's the same speed than the other stick, it won't slow it down.

But I strongly recommend building a new one. And the current RAM is not defective, it's less than 256 because it's pooling certain amount for Video RAM.

Thanks for the help

lol I know my comp is pretty out dated. I run a Intel Celeron D 335 / 2.8 GHz which should indicate I'm not a huge pc gamer. It still plays UT 2004 and Vampire the Masqurade: Bloodlines. Half-life 2 pretty well.

well, i would recommend figuring out what speed your ram is running at, to decide whether to keep your old ram in

you can download hwinfo32 at http://www.hwinfo.com/ and it will show you your ram speed.
your pc will probably run alot better if you seriously only have 256 megs right now....
