Forums - Gaming - Square Enix sends cease and desist letter to FF Type 0 PSP translation group

I wondered when SE will finally notice it.
This was way too public.

My gut is that they knew about it for some time, but didn't have permission to do anything. It takes time for companies to decide what to do.

Still, it's a massive disappointment. What I think SE should have done is ask them to pull it until one business quarter after Type-0's console release. After that, put the fan translation on PSN and give the translators a small cut of the sales. The market who would rather play a translated game on a PSP to buy a current gen console game won't buy the game, anyway.

Of course, I also think Nintendo should have saved the Ura Project and slapped it on the Wii U eShop. Heck, if it was good enough I might've made it a preorder bonus for the real Wii U Zelda.

The problem is that these companies are too protective of the way they create content for fans. The developer studio model works, but there are more ways to do it these days. I absolutely believe the IP owner deserves a cut from sales from these fan-made projects, but I also believe that the companies should work with fan-production teams whenever possible. Rather than sending cease and desist notices, it would have been better for everyone if they had said "look, we love what you're doing, but we're also not making money from it and it threatens our current projects X, Y, and Z. Is there any way we can work together?"

Annoying, but I can see where SE is coming from. The translation would probably just cannibalize on actual game sales

The fan translation is solid though. These guys really took good care with the translation.

As for SE, its kinda too late to do a C&D. Its already out with a game already patched for download. SE should have talked to the translators before hand.

Good News. I love it when people's hopes and dreams are crushed! It makes me happy knowing people are sad over this.

Xbone... the new "N" word   Apparently I troll MS now | Evidence | Evidence

The only issue here is that SE should have canned it a long time ago, regardless of what their plans were.

Ughhhh.

True. I'm happy that the patch is already out, it really sucks that they are ignoring western Vita gamers.

^This. It's pointless now. Fans shouldn't have been the first to release a translation to begin with. Their own fault

No, it is not this. If you believe that then you also believe that anybody should be able take your car keys because your not using it and they feel they gave a legitimate reason that justifies it.
