Forums - Sony - Blu-ray advantage starting to shine in games?

I don't get why now that HD-DVD is dead that Microsoft doesn't sign on for HD-VMD. It uses the same laser and has a potential size of up to 100GB.(10GB up to 10 possible currently 20 theoretical max) That and they don't increase the cost by much at all. While 10GB a layer is not as much as HD-DVD or Blu-ray it's a good deal more than DVD-9.

I'd say Blu-rays storage will show later in textures and music (it has in music already but uncompressed music is mostly a waste there's some good compression methods with loss that is not noticeable by the human ear.) the extra content is very minimal amount of space and honestly I think they could have fit it on the DVD if they wanted they just didn't have it ready and saw an opportunity to get some extra cash from live and then later via PS3 by offering it "free" on a brand new disc that'll probably be released at 50-60$

Having said that, it's a decent game but I wouldn't pay more than 40$ for it which I didn't(yay e-bay)

What I find funny is the original CVG article never mentions anything like "Thanks to the storage capacity of Blu-Ray...". That was added on the PS3 Fanboy site as an obvious jab at 360. The truth is, this is pretty common place when a game is released on another console a year after it's original release. Fight Night had more content on PS3 than 360, Virtua Fighter 5 had more content on 360 than PS3. That is basically the apology for not having it as soon as the other guy. I highly doubt a game like Overlord was maxing out an HD-DVD when Mass Effect fits on one disc. That article is nothing but spin.

With that out of the way, it's nice it's coming to PS3, and with the added content to boot.

As stated, the 360 does not use HD DVD's for games. And indeed DVD is about 9GB, but we don't know how much space the game by itself takes up, and then add on to that the downloadable content. So it might be less that 9GB, but chances are it's more, in which case a Blu-ray disc has an advantage.

If games like Mass Effect fit on one DVD, Overlord sure wouldn't have any problems, with or without the DLC.

Just another case of a fanboy adding 1 and 1 and coming up with 3 as the logical answer.
Well, when you get your news off of PS3 Fanboy, you're asking for a little spin.

None of which were disc-size related. The texture pop-in was probably a RAM issue. You see it in a fair amount of UE3 games.

One plus one is three.

DVD-9 has about 8.54 GB of storage.

That's just it: chances are it wasn't over ~8.5GB of information (the true size of DVD-9). Mass Effect, Forza, every game that doesn't use FMV extensively has fit on one DVD on the 360. Shit, GTA IV is gonna fit on one disc, too.

Overlord was not that big of a game and as far as I know, their DLC was not very substantial. This is a gimmick to try to get people to buy the game again by adding content and releasing late on another system. It's done all the time, both for and against the 360.

There is also another point to bring up. You may think you're getting a deal with the PS3 version, but there's no retail price yet. If it's a 59.99 game it's actually cheaper to buy the 360 version and all of the DLC it offers. You can get it new for 39.99 or for as low as 19.99 on auction sites like eBay. The DLC comes to $15 for both packs since the third was free anyways. Just to let those wondering what this extra content is:

Raising Hell Expansion-$10

New levels for all five realms

Challenge Pack-$5

7 new multiplayer maps and Legendary difficulty for single player game

Pack 3-Free

Split screen multiplayer

@Onyxmeth

"I'm sorry, you're correct. It uses a DVD-9, which has even less space I think. Thanks, that proves it further."

----------------------------------------------------
Uh, no it doesn't...Blue Dragon (As corrected, 3) and Lost Odyssey are both on 4 disc on the 360...FOUR!
