Good write. But I'd say the key for Nintendo is NOT to show more of the classic stuff. They need a new IP, or a new take on an old IP (think Super Mario Galaxy) to get people energized about their brand.

The thing is, with the sales the console is at, with the price, your best bet for sales is with the core audience. Like, I'm shopping around right now as well just for mk8 and smash. This will be my second wiiU. If nintendo can push out the classic core, they'll get their foot in the door to lower production costs. There are quite a few measures, something like I mentioned in the op, and yeah, I totally agree with your suggestion about looking at things differently (like hyrule warriors).

With 2D and 3D Mario, MK8, Smash and Zelda around the corner, the core are taken care of.  What Nintendo needs to show is something fresh. A concept that will excite old and new fans alike.  When the chips are down, the last thing you should do is play it safe.

Platinum StarFox!

On topic: like all mid-gen E3's, this is going to be all about the games, with features taking a secondary note. The question is who can get some exciting ideas going forwards.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

A Platinum Starfox would certainly appease fans while not taking away from Nintendo's internal resources.  It would also most certainly sell better than Platinum's other games.  A win-win-win.
