Forums - Gaming - Developmental dead ends and the pitfalls of game trends.

So this was a very interesting read.

First of all, I'm sorry things didn't work out with your job.

Secondly, although I don't fully agree with everything you wrote, I agree that, in general, the video game industry is becoming more and more safe, predictable, and homogenized. There's no doubt in my mind that this medium we love so much has entered into a period of decadence, both artistically and commercially.

I blame this on several things, including, but not limited to, an increased emphasis on presentation over gameplay, the trend of breaking apart the component pieces of a game and hiding them behind a paywall, and what you correctly identified as "retail priced expansion[s] of the last title." The only solution I see to these problems is for consumers to stop buying flashy but ultimately shallow games; stop pre-ordering games; stop buying DLC and making micro-transactions; and stop paying $60 for annualized sequels. The bad news is that consumers show no sign of stopping or even slowing down any of these actions.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. Best of luck with your new game. Please let us know when you finish. I'd be proud to play it :)

Around the Network

I would love a game about exploring an Alien planet like this, and try to make contact.

But an (AAA) game apparently isn't a game if you're not busy killing things 90% of the time.
