- When it is no longer for sale. Abandonware is fine.
- When you're a teenager and don't know any better. (I used to be a pirate, have to admit)
The first time some software of the, at the time, 10 man company I worked for got pirated, the first reaction was: cool somebody actually thinks our software is so desirable they can't wait for the release. Immediately followed by, how did they get their hands on that pre-release version send out for review. And that's coming out of our pay checks.
Since then we had to work with copy protection and data encryption, big nuisance for testing.
