The Songwriters Association of Canada will reveal a proposal Thursday that would see every Canadian's monthly Internet bill increase by $5 in exchange for the ability to download as many "illegal" music files as they choose.
The association says its proposal, which would require federal approval, would wipe out the need for music-selling websites such as iTunes.ca and PureTracks.ca, making it legal for one person to share a music CD with as many people as they wish.
This morning I woke up to BT (canadian morning tv show) telling me of a new bill that would impose a $5 levy on my internet connection because of pirated music... the first thing that came to my head was "I havn't pirated music since I graduated college, but I sure as hell will be pirating if you charge me $5/month..."
Shitty way to wake up.. but then I read up on the proposal... and well as you can see above.. its not that bad of a deal. I can download whatever song without legally for just $5 a month. That's freaking awesome! Sure it sucks for those like my parents who have never pirated music. But I think I might take the time to teach them if this bill passes through... If their going to get charged for this "feature", I might as well show them how to use it.
