Forums - Sony - How inFAMOUS: Second Son Used the PS4's Power

There are really 2 important conclusions from those slides:

A next gen game, at 1080p and with high image quality like Infamous needs:

- A lot of fast memory just for the G-buffers, here 80MB for Infamous.
- A heavy dose of GPU compute and asynchronous GPU compute running in queues alongside the graphics pipeline better explained in the full version:

Access  atime is irrevelant when it comes to streaming, it's relatively big chunks of data to stream. Only the read/write (write is important as well) matter.

Obivously you don't put a SSD in a console, because you need space at least 250-500 GB, especially with the digital model today. Unless it sounds sane to add  200-300$ to the cost of the machine just to get better streaming..

That's why Hybrid SSD'S exist. A 1TB with 64 GB of SS cache can be had for $125-$150. The most common apps and OS are stored on the SSD portionand everything else on the HDD. The beauty is if lets say you stop playi g COD and Start playing Infamous, then Infamous will be stored on the SDD.

i know its off topic... but can you point me to a hybrid drive with 1TB and 64 GB of SSD? i only find one with 8 GB...

on topic... great to see sucker punch put some info out about their game. always love that about guerilla games.

Much more important: So it's true, only 4.5 gb is available to developers. 3.5 gb reserved for background tasks sounds like complete overkill to me. Maybe Sony will free up some space later on?

I hope they do this for both the PS4 and Xbox One.

Even with all their enhanced capabilities those are seriously bloated OS's.

There is none... I think he confused with the cache that is 64MB.

The best hibrid (SSHD) you can put in the PS4 is the Seagate Momentus XT 750GB (7200RPM) with 8GB SSD + 32MB Cache but Seagate stopped to manufacture it (I don't know why but I think they have trouble making 7200RPM HDDs for notebooks) and it was replaced by the Momentus XT 1GB (5400RPM) with 8GB SSD + 64MB cache.

This is a good post for the options available to PS4: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=92875789&postcount=915
