This is why I personally don't support kickstarter games. You have no idea what you'll get, if you even get it.

You should always be cautious with crowd funding. I expect to hear more stories like this the more crowd funding becomes popular. Only fund a game if the developer is trustable and has experience: don't just fund a game because of lofty promises. I funded Star Citizen, and while I'm anxiously awaiting it and super excited for it, it is starting to look more and more like a pay to win game, something that I didn't see coming when I first backed it.

That's why I didn't fund the Eternal Darkness spiritual successor...

and probably why it didn't meet it's goal, because it was from the developer of the super delayed too Human.

I need a good track record before i put my money in.

The only web thing I have donated to is Wikimedia (which I guess is crowdfunded, but not in the same way as Kickstarter etc)

Yeah, it's a risk, and you've got to determine whether you trust the dev. But anyone who thinks this is a reason not to contribute at all is failing to see how crowdfunding is revolutionizing the industry. The fans can finally give devs the money to make any game they want directly rather than having to go through a publisher that will stifle creativity and take most of the profits. It's liberating, and because of it we're getting projects that never would have seen the light of day.

So people who say, "I don't do Kickstarter" really piss me off. But I'm sure they'll be right here, citing this very story as a great reason to deny the future of the industry.

I helped fund Project No. 9, but that is from experienced developers and, even so, it was a small amount of expendable funds, so I'm not tremendously worried about what happens with it.

I've never backed anything else on Kickstarter as far as I can recall. If I have, I've never gotten anything out of it, anyways.

I have only Kickstarted a single game, A Hat in Time. The guys making that game look very professional and they have big names backing them up (the guy who made the Conker, Banjo and other Rare games music). They also offered an Alpha and Beta build, and on their Twitter they constantly give updates on the project, so I definitely trust these guys.

The above however is rare to find on Kickstarter, many games that get funded never see a single update, the people who put money in a game don't know a single thing of what's happening until/if the game releases.
