'Tomb Raider' reboot celebrates first anniversary; set to pass 6 million units

Publisher Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics celebrated Thursday the one-year anniversary of the 2013 reboot of "Tomb Raider" with news of game sales set to pass 6 million units.

On the game's official Tumblr, head of studios' Darrell Gallagher reflected on the development of "Tomb Raider" and how overwhelmed everyone involved was with the critical acclaim and positive fan responses they received. "With more than 70 nominations and awards on industry 'best of lists' at the end of 2013 we have been incredibly flattered with the response and feedback," Gallagher wrote. After speaking briefly on the next-gen port titled "Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition," he proudly revealed the new sales milestone the game will soon pass.

By the end of this month we will surpass 6 million units for our Tomb Raider reboot, and, having achieved profitability back in 2013 Tomb Raider has exceeded profit expectations and continues to make significant contributions to our overall financial performance.

At launch we set franchise records for the fastest selling day one and month one in Tomb Raider history. With the positive word of mouth and continued commercial momentum it’s great to see Tomb Raider (2013) on course to become the best-selling game in the history of the franchise! This would be a crowning achievement for the teams around the world, and one that we have our sights firmly set on!

When "Tomb Raider" was originally released last year, it sold 3.4 million copies in four weeks of its launch across various gaming platforms. However, Square Enix deemed it a disappointment, as it did not meet their initial sales estimates. "Tomb Raider" executive producer Scot Amos said in January the game finally became profitable near the end of 2013, covering its budget estimated close to 100 million. "Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition" was released in late January for the PS4 and Xbox One.

I just got the PS4 version. Its surprisingly good so far. But, im only like 4 hours into it.

Well done to a good game. Hope this means PS4 (not cross gen) sequel is in the works.

6m sold, and barely profitable... How could this game cost so much?! I'm really enjoying it so far, but that's one expansive game, that is!

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

And this is why people talk about a video game crash all the time.

Square Enix complaining about Tomb Raider sales. I mean sure the game only had like 4 million sales when they complained, but still. If a game has to sell multiple million to make a profit you only have yourself to blame.

Of course 6 million to Square Enix is barely enough to keep your job, I'm sure, because they have such excellent stategies, upper level management, and analysts. Congrats though. It's tough to argue that Tomb Raider wasn't a great game.

I'm happy with it. I bought it alot earlier than its costumary for me, so the game variety is still lacking, but i will be busy once april comes and i start playing FFXIV on it.

Much like the rest of the 6 million buyers, im looking forward to the future more than anything. ^^

I haven't played the game yet.
