Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 has received a mixed reaction from the press, prompting a developer of Mercury Steam to come forward and discuss the sequel’s development, and to place the blame with studio director Enric Alvarez, a man he claims is both “mean,” and bearing, “serious problems.”

The insight follows a string of middling Castlevania: lords of Shadow 2 reviews, and comes from the Meristation forums, by way of a user who is known for having direct contact with one Mercury Steam developer. The anonymous employee has expressed his distaste with the game’s development, and with Alvarez himself.

He explained that he experienced a degree of “hell” during Lords of Shadow 2 development, and stressed that Hideo Kojima actually had little to do with the first game. “He came by, set a seal, visited the studio, signed some things and that was it. He had even less to do with Mirror of Fate and LoS2,” they claimed.

“The vast majority of this team is aware that the game we’ve done is a real piece of shit that has nothing to do with the first one’s quality and production values,” he went on. “Nobody is surprised by the low reviews we’ve got.

“If there’s someone to blame here, that’s Enric Álvarez. He is the person who has led a broken development based on his personal criteria, completely overlooking programmers, designers and artists. Despite his nice look to the press, often considered as some sort of creative ‘visionary’ in the looks of David Cage and Molyneux, this guy has serious problems. He is a mean and naughty guy, and since the ‘success Lords of Shadows 1′ his ego has grown to the point of not even daring to say ‘hello’ when you meet him in the hallway.

“His distrust to his own workers is enormous. Most of the development team often found out features of the game through press news, rather than from the studio’s head – unbelievable. And there is no corporate culture here at all… this is just a handful of people working blindly and at the disposal of an alleged visionary.”

The employee added that mercury Steam’s internal structure is “archaic,” and that its founders have, “zero abilities for running a studio.” He also called the game’s art direction, “erratic and beheaded.” Quite damningly, he claimed that Mercury Steam’s “QA department is treated like cattle, with shameful wages and almost everyday bullying.”

He explained, “The studio’s signature engine (one with many flaws) was solely coded by two guys, one of them being a founder of the company and Enric’s confident. Access for the new programmers to the source code to update or refurbish the engine is denied, so things are still done in a 10-year-old fashion.”

“Often here newbie developers know more than their own bosses,” he stressed. “This structure only leads to a slow, messy and absurd development process, with the end result of Lords of Shadows 2 being a perfect example of what happens due to that.

“Absolutely every design idea has to be monitored, taken away and mutilated by Enric Álvarez. Several game designers have grown tired of this and have abandoned the studio.”

He revealed that since work on Lords of Shadow 2 wrapped, Mercury Steam, laid off 35 employees, and that more firings are expected. It is now feared that the studio’s future hangs in the balance as Konami is upset with the “mediocre,” game. “Expectations for our future are quite bad,” he said.

In closing the developer said, “And finally, because not everything is bad in here, I wanted to say that the real team behind this company is an incredible bunch of people. If all those guys who are not allowed to be promoted due to our Jurassic studio leads had the chance to set the course of the company, our future would be so bright.

“There’s just so much passion and talent here, more than I’ve ever seen anywhere else, but it’s completely held back. I really hope that those who read this understand what we’ve lived here. Someone has to say this so it is not lost in time after the game’s launch.”

What do you make of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, and the claims above?

I'm pretty saddened to hear this. I think Castlevania LoS2 is a great game, but whatever was going on in Mercury Steam is fucked up.

So this could mean Mercury Steam going out of bussiness. The funny thing is, the actual other Spanish dev with some kind of reknown is Tequila Works, and Enric Álvarez is working there now.

Im not shocked at all, especially about the boss. He had nothing but a condescending attitude towards anything not castlevania 3. I dont understand why Japanese developers continue to outsource defining brand products to developers who dont respect it.

That can only mean thats a good thing for Mercury Steam now that Enric left although i dont think Konami would trust them with the ip again.

Thats actually pretty evident. No sane person would make a castlevania game in modern setting, fighting soldiers and robots with guns in a boring, industrial sci fi factory and also add a ridiculous stealth sections that are just god awful and antithesis of fun.

Also, the face palming, incredibly cringe worthy 'GO HERE & PRESS THIS'' instructions every fucking minute certanly dont help. And as if the game director didnt already think the fans are brain dead retards, they added a control to highlight your path, because you know, its not an open world castlevania game unless its being dumbed down to incredible depths

Haven't received the game yet so can't talk about the game itself other than the demo, but when it comes to graphics, framerate, how the game controls. I do think the people who worked on it are great at developing games. Great looking game with a locked 30fps. All your combat skills control really well. Uncharted style climbing, even though has been done on the previous game is also done well.

In the demo though there's a lot of hand holding. Every time you get to a new section, the camera pans over to that then looks over where you'll climb. It has to feel to teach you how to block, etc. That's one thing that was also common early in the first game for the first three chapters and then a little bit here and there throughout the game. The first game is amazing and one of my favorite PS3 games, but the whole hand holding thing is an annoyance. I thought Lords of Shadow Mirror of Fate was also a good game, just check points were way too forgiving.

I'm inclined to believe the person though because on every single review I've looked at, whether it was good or bad, pointed out that the biggest problem in the game was turning into a rat in order to unlock a door or area, or stealth sections. None of the reviews said much more than that, but if they're that bad, I wouldn't doubt that people would say they don't agree with those being in the game. As a Castlevania fan I don't think they belong in the game. Also, you're Dracula and supposed to defeat Satan. You can kill Satan but can't kill a few armored guys with guns? You're forced to sneak around them? Doesn't make much sense.

Anyways. I'm going in the game with an open mind. So will give my opinion once I finish it. Should receive it today hopefully.

There are so many complaints of Dracula in modern times, but why can't there be a modern setting with guns and such.  Dracula was killed in 1999 in the original timeline.  There were guns then.  You can get a gun, silver gun, and positron rifle in Aria of Sorrow.  There are some enemies in the Castlevania series that use old rifles.  I'm just saying that people should keep an open mind about the setting because having a modern setting doesn't mean that it can't work.  Ninja Gaiden has enemies that use machine guns and the gameplay works fine.

So much bias out there from people that haven't even played the game because a perceived notion from those players that a game can't work well because it is in modern settings, or it has an emo version of Dante, or etc.  How about take the setting and theme of the game as what the developer wanted it to be and rate a game on what matters.  Gameplay and possibly story if there's a lot of it forced on the player.
