Hmmm... I'm actually working on an article that sounds similar based on the title of this thread. I'll be sure to bookmark this article and read it after I finish to see if we have any of the same ideas.

The financing idea is decent but it assumes that big publishers will have the vision to finance experimental games that may fail, accepting that risk to get the one that really pays off.
It's true that they are better able to do this than the small developers, but I don't see much evidence that the big publishers are actually willing to do this even though it's in their best interest in the long run.
