I am not an indie developer (yet) but I want to be one of them. I was working with unity engine but later I found that full package of unity engine is quite expensive. Now me and a friend of mine are toying with gamemaker.

There are lots of ways to get unity for free.

Also if you don't plan to make money off your game, the free version should be more than enough for your needs.
