Well first off it certainly helps to have a better quality image. I used this one:

Can you walk me through the process though? I'm still a bit skeptical of your skills. But dont get me wrong, the more the merrier!

 

I tried a vertical edge recently, with more steps, same results. Same 2:3 ratio, this time with higher precision. It's more likely than ever @720P.

 

Actuially now I've done it, if I'm doing it right, pixel counting is shockingly easy.

 

I guess it would get pretty difficult if you were pixel counting last gen though, and trying to discern a difference between say, 720P and 680P. The difference between 1080 and 720 though when you assume those are your only alternatives though, is really easy to count.

It's pretty easy when it's just 720p upscaled to 1080.

The problem though is when games have really good AA or when the two resolutions are pretty close.
