Forums - Gaming - can we finally agree the wii was a fad

fad is too strong of a word, but the OP isnt really wrong.

Its not like the Wii U launched with a Wii mote and motion controls.

For me, it was always a fad though. Its the reason why i never got a Wii.

Wii U though... is more interesting to me. Just need a redesign to make that tablet controller smaller.

Lets see

Running total sales at ed of each year approx

2006 = 3.2m
2007 = 20m
2008 = 44m
2009 = 67m
2010 = 84m
2011 = 94m
2012 = 99m
2013 = 100m

yes fads last for 6 years lol.

yup wii sold 100 million, it sold great for about 4 years, but that's what fads are they sell great then disappear quickly, looks at console sales history, you don't go from selling 100 million consoles then the successor that selling worse then dreamcast, it just shows how big of a fad the wii really was, and that the market has moved on.

fad

noun ˈfad

: something (such as an interest or fashion) that is very popular for a short time

Sorry, but four years is not a short time, under any reading of the phrase "short time."  So now that we've established that it sold well for a good amount of time, you revert to the Wii U as proof that the Wii was a fad.  I submit that the Wii U failure has little to do with the Wii being a fad, and due to other factors instead (no killer app, little third party support, software drought even from Nintendo, gamepad didn't catch on, lack of advertising, low specs compared to PS4 and the One leading people to wait for those, too high of a price and too long for a price cut, horrible naming and branding, etc. etc. etc.).

you dont even need to use Wii U. Wii Itself was on track to outsell PS2, freaking PS2. Not only did it end up not getting anyhwere near that systems numbers. Its struggled to match PS1'S

doesn't matter if it was a fad or not. Nintendo made money. lots and lots of money.

I agree with you.that's all that really matters.

Here is one Maelstrom Article I read about the topic. It's about the same thing maybe this helps.

http://seanmalstrom.wordpress.com/2013/12/22/email-isnt-it-obvious/

that barely helped, he just threw up the same thing he was saying for years and using DS as some kind of proof. I wonder how he feels about the Wii U situation

its selling a milion sW units PER WEEK on its 7th holidays. its far from a fad

The wii sold over a 100 million units over a 6 year period and people actually label it as a fad?

Thats crazy.

Intel Core i7 3770K [3.5GHz]|MSI Big Bang Z77 Mpower|Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 2 x 4GB|MSI GeForce GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr 2|OCZ Vertex 4 128GB|Corsair HX750|Cooler Master CM 690II Advanced|

why are people shocked? It was written on the wall from day one. It was evident that Wii was going to be far behind PS360 in hardware, online, games(this is debatable) etc. Once more people saw this and once more people realized just how limited motion controls are if done wrong (and IMHO wiimote didnt get it right) then people would move to HDs. You could see it in the massive drop in sales for Wii and better software sales for PS360 multiplats overall.

Yeah, such a fad if you can't outsell the best selling console in history and if you effectively match (by a million or two right?) the second best selling home console in history.

Btw, isn't the PS4 tracking ahead of the PS2 after having the best launch in history?  I guess if it doesn't outsell the PS2, it's a total fad.
