10. Wet Work (MW1)
I loved this map because it allowed for both close quarter combat and great sniping. And since there's really only one way to progress in the map (forward), it leads to some pretty tense situations where you never know when you move up, whether someone is around the corner waiting or not. I didn't like it much on TDM, but in Search and Destroy it was an epic map.
9. Castle (World at War)
A brilliant, well designed map with no real flaws. Each spawn had enough area where you didn't need to worry about being spawn killed, and there was a lot of variety in the surrounding areas with buildings and multi-tiered elements to make the gun battles interesting. Really loved that you could attack any of the sniper nests in multiple ways, something I felt every MW1 map lacked.
8. Nuketown 2025 (Black Ops II)
Not a great strategic map, not a particularly well designed map. Just a small map where you kill a lot of people. Most game modes on it are terrible, but to me, the more team oriented modes like Demolition and Hardpoint, worked amazing on it. My only complaint is that the spawns are wide open, so if someone is spawn camping you, which is common on such a small map, you don't have much cover. Also, the big kill streaks rack up huge kills on this map because of this.
7. Terminal (MW2)
The first map from MW2 on my list. One of my favorite things about it was it provided a ton of cover from the ridiculous kill streaks in the game. But also, it's one of the few maps in modern CoD imho to allow for virtually any play style. You can run and gun with an SMG, you can play strategic and watch corridors with an assault rifle or LMG, you can take a shotgun and get right in peoples faces, and you can snipe. Plus it's another map where the team oriented modes shined a lot brighter.
6. Cliffside (World at War)
World at War's 2nd map for me is Cliffside. It really has 3 main corridors, the right side full of foliage and hills where you set up ambushes. The middle where you're progressing at great risk of being picked off by snipers or other players, and the left side, full of nice eroded walls and other cover spots, but also has a danger element of the cliff on your far left which you can fall of of and die if you aren't careful. Another map that was epic for Search and Destroy.
5. Makin (World at War)
Yet another map from World at War. You could also include the free Makin Day map that Treyarch released, which makes it day time, which changes the tides and takes out most of the water from the map. But at night the map is just amazing. Loads of great little huts and walkways, multi-tiered elements. Search and Destroy on this map was incredible. I have been waiting for them to update this one for one of the newer games.
4. Brecourt (CoD 1)
If you've only played CoD after MW1, you'll know this as Wasteland from MW2. But it was amazing in CoD because there were a lot more snipers. It made running around in the ditches a lot more tense as you never knew when or if someone was going to pick you off. Also didn't have to worry about AC130's and chopper gunners and noob tubers launching right as the game started and killing your entire team.
3. Crossfire (MW1)
Great map design. One big street with some buildings on each side for cover. So every match you had snipers battling one another from opposite ends of the street, and then clusters of people in firefights on each side of the map (usually trying to progress up or down to get to the snipers for some easy kills). Was also one of the few smaller MW1 maps to not suffer from grenade spam right from the spawn. My style on this map was P90, juggernaut, and just speed through the map killing everything I saw.
2. Outskirts (World at War)
The final World at War map (it is my favorite CoD game in case you didn't notice) is Outskirts. I love this map because it not only incorporates every single play style, but it also includes tanks. There are like 3-4 maps in WaW that include tanks, but imho none of them did it as effectively as Outskirts. There are not only multiple ones of them, but the routes are designed well so that they can go almost everywhere. And there's tons of cover and ambush spots where you can hide from them, or, if you wanted, take them out.
1. Crash (MW1) & Bloc (MW1)
Yes, I am wussing out and putting a double pick as #1. Both from MW1, and both amazing maps. Crash is pretty much the de facto standard CoD #1 map, and for good reason. It works on every single mode, the spawns work well, and the action flows freely on the map every single match. Bloc was an epic map where on the left and right are destroyed apartment buildings, and then in the middle you have a little courtyard. But the only thing anyone ever used the middle for was to try and sprint up to flank people upstairs in the apartments. That's where all the action took place. The sniper battles on this map were just amazing. My style on this map was either snipe, or run and gun with a P90 just wrecking people throughout the apartment buildings.
I could list 20 close calls that probably should have made the list. Vacant, Strike, Firing Range, Skidrow, Highrise, etc.
