Forums - Gaming - When will the next revolution be?

The eighth generation seems to be one of business as usual in spite of all indicators.

Nintendo is detemined to pursue its current direction in face of losses and a very low start for Wii U. They refuse to question any opinion their developers hold, the way they choose what games to make or the way they choose to make games. They make impossible predictions on hardware and don't even react to abysmal software sales by certain titles.

The rest of the Industry is continuing its path of more, bigger, more frequent and more expensive regardless of losses or continiously missed expectations. These days an EA or Capcom or Square manages to lose money on games that sell 4 million, because they expected 10. Everyone on the forum could see Fuse or Splinter Cell coming but apparently none of the executives involved could? Their response to WoW declining is to hand out lv90 characters like candy and devalue their remaining customers' time? Their response to FF14 failing was to pull an entire FF team for 3 years to force it to work?

The whole business is subscribing to this narrative that next-gen will save them and validate everything they are doing. Yet the early indicators don't bear that out at all - Vita and Wii U's performances, CoD, BF and AC looking to sell lower than last time even considering the next-gen ports, and that PS4/One for all their high preorders aren't really attracting new customers or bringing back dissatisfied customers.

So, when will the correction be? How many quarters of sustained losses will cause the industry to scale back their projects and refocus on what will succeed in the market instead of what they want?

Around the Network

You're back ^^

First, welcome back!

Second, I don't think we will have another revolution in a long time. Maybe when a video game crash occurs but I don't see it happening again.

I'm affraid that it will take them too long to realize the situation, that by then it may be too late to save some of them and that the answer to solve their problems may go against our interests.

I think that the turning point will be after Christmas 2014 when publishers unveil the results of the 3rd quarter. That's the crucial quarter for them, the one when they post the profits that change their negative numbers from the rest of the quarters and allow them to profit, and by then we'll already be in the new gen and not between the transition. And I think the results won't be any good, posting mininal profits if at all that will lead to very bad anual results and shareholders angry and demanding for a turnaround.

And the answer, I'm affraid, will be less focus on console gaming and more on mobile gaming. Will this be the solution to their problems? No, I don't think so.

PS: As the others have said, it's nice to see you're back.

Please excuse my bad English.

Former gaming PC: i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

If they do bad, surely they will have to just reduce the budgets these games get. Maybe an end to an obsession of AAA games and overly realistic graphics. Or maybe more will just go to F2P. although, i don't want that
