'Super Mario 3D Land'
for the Nintendo 3DS released in 2011.
Finally there was a handheld that was good enough to be on console. Well, there's another, but that one is still a long way away anyway. If WiiU's sequel to this game is as good as this one, and I don't see why not, I'm in for a blast this holiday. 'Super Mario 3D Land' packs pretty much everything you want in a game. It's fun, it's challenging and has great value because it last quite a while with high replay-value.
It was my second game on the system, and I didn't initially bought it for the 3D effect. From demo-units in stores, which only had a level of Pilot Wings at the time, I thought the effect was surprisingly good, but not something essential. '3D Land' however, made it essential. Besides the price, I don't see why one would get a 2DS over a 3DS nowadays to lose the 3D effect. It's amazing.
Naturally, because it's in the name, the game uses the 3D feature to it's fullest. It's possible to complete the game without, but if you want to find all the secrets and to find the alternate exits in levels, you're going to need the 3D. The ability to see depth in the game is so well utilized, that stuff could be cleverly hidden and even more ingeniously found by the player. It also helped at general platformer through all those superb levels, in fact, the ease at which the player can jump from platform to platform with the 3D effect, eroded my jumping skills (no joke) on 'regular' 2D console games!
#35 Hint
My #35 was released at the start of the year and considered so good a game, that the main numbered entry in this franchise that was released near the end of that same year could only wish it was this game!
