How has Sony fixed this issue? As far as we know, they haven't fixed it. We won't know until after the PS4 is released. The only way they can fix this issue is by boosting their download servers and bandwidth. It is not a matter of design at all.

Yes, they now allow a lot of updates to be handled in the background or to be done automatically at late night times (does this require PS+?), but that does not fix the fact that there will still be mandatory updates blocking you from playing newly purchased games until after you have them downloaded, and those downloads may or may not be any faster than the slow PS3 downloads.

Umm Sony said they knew it was an issue before it launched, and they were chaning it for PS4.....I'll trust Sony's words over you, but keep fighting to try to make the PS4 look bad. Sony themselves said it was a core design issue that would not be fixed until the PS4...

Also, with auto updates its pretty moot at this point anyway.

I'm just going to link you to another post of yours as proof that what I said above, you also acknowledge. We won't know if real issue was fixed or not until after launch.

And as I said, auto updates can't fix the issue of mandatory updates for newly purchased games. I'm not fighting to try and do anything about the PS4, but it appears I struck a nerve somehow. Don't be so emotionally attached to a console,  bud!

mandatory updates for new games is not justa  SONY thing, heck the X1 has mandatory installas, and has mandatory updates as well...

Your constant defending of MS, and you tell me not to be so vested ina  console LMAO. Pot, kettle.

BS? The 360 has mandatory updates as well, that's fact. The x1 has mandatory installs, that is also fact. learn the difference between fact and BS.

Are you serious ?

PS3 having a design issue instead of flawed policy ?

Their andatory installs are mandatory according to the developper, as these are free to patch add, do whatever they want. On Xbox they have standards to meet and when they met those standards they still have to pay a sort of penalty for imposing a patch onto users.

Care to explain what type of flaw in design would have a console get oversized slow patches ?

I am talking about Firmware updates. They reason they are the way they are now is the Ps3's design, Sony has said this, and they are fixing it for Ps4...you're talking about something different.

Oversized slow patches????? WTF are you on about? Most firmware updates on Ps3 are 20 MB, take 2 minutes to install.

Outside of GT5, what lareg slow patching is prevalent on Ps3????? Game patches on sp3 are no diff then 360.

Simple fix, either hit circle to skip the update or better yet disconnect from the internet and you'll never get an alert at all. Unless you're talking about installs in which case its just something you have to deal with. There are very few games that should take that long to install though.

Ever tried Defiance ? Almost 3 gigs in "patching"...

Now that the OP has discovered that you DON'T have to download a patch before you play, this thread seems to have broken down into a collection of misinformation about the PS4.

First, downloading on the PS4 will be faster. That's because of the way the PS3 receives data, it's convoluted and slower than it should be. Sony has confirmed that this process has been improved significantly. The issue was, really, that Sony did not expect digital distribution to be a Big Thing and did not optimize the PS3 for it. That is also related to the unnecessary way the PS3 has to store the content before it can be installed. That, obviously, has been changed. No more installations, we've known that for a long time. Data will be installed on the fly as it streams.

The same goes for installations from the disc, that's also gone. Anything that needs to be installed to the HDD will be streamed as you play so that there will be no initial waiting. The best developers had mostly already solved this on the PS3, to be honest.

HD resolution and the rise of digital distribution brought a lot of growing pains to the industry. Most of those will be fixed next gen.
