The United States and other interventionist nations belonging to the UN won't allow that to happen. No politician in the US that wants to be re-elected will suggest publicly that we withdraw from the de-militarized zone on the Korean peninsula. It would be career suicide. People will say that we don't support the troops and we will be laying off some of the military when they need jobs and to stay employed. Even though, you know, we've been there since the 1950's and are still there for no apparent reason, with absolutely no end in sight. Politicians and the military higher-ups will cling to as much power as they can for as long as they can, regardless of whether or not there is any valid reason to do so.
Sad as it is, it's the truth.

This is untrue.
It is the stated goal of successive South Korean governmnets to seek peaceful reunification, a goal the US Government openly (and genuinely) supports. I will grant you that the US would not relish this occuring in such a way that brings SK under NK control, or brings China down close to the current border between the two Koreas. But by the same token, China would prefer not to have a US-allied Korea on it's doorstep. Regardless, the US Military is stretched worldwide, it would actually suit their purposes enormously if they could withdraw from Korea, and have an enlarged and (eventually) strengthened and unified Korea as an ally.
A recent report outlined the need for future planning for reunification after an NK collapse, and was heavily cited in Western media:

I'd like to suggest for a moment that what the US says publicly and what the US does in reality are two different things. Unfortunately, to your point, we are stretched quite thinly around the world as it is. It's because we a have a foreign policy of desperately needing to be involved in everyone's business even when it has nothing to do with our national security. North Korea is not going to launch a nuke at the US. It's just not going to happen. If for no other reason than, our retaliation would be to nuke them back within a matter of hours and they would be decimated. Which they already know, since they're not stupid.
North Korea doesn't need to collapse for the reunification to occur. Reunification would happen if all allied troops vacated the de-militarized zone and left South Korea and North Korea to decide their own future. South Korea has a rich, westernized economy, the complete opposite of North Korea, which is poor, has little to no economy, and relies on China's charity to feed their own people. To put another way, South Korea is more than capable of taking care of themselves. The peninsula doesn't need to be reunited, it just needs us to not be there. North Korea hates us and in turn opposes SK precisely because we are still there. At a stand-still for more than sixty years. It's a ridiculous waste of time and resources, and we are doing nothing but pro-longing the misery and the agony. We should spend some of that money here at home. Re-build our roads and bridges, etc. You know, use our tax dollars on us instead of the de-militarized zone.
