Forums - General - Has anybody here taken the TOEFL test? Mind sharing your experience?

So I'm currently on the job hunt (again) and everywhere I look employers state that the ability to communicate fluently in english is very important to them. I am currently contemplating on taking the TOEFL test but I am unsure if I stand a chance and since it costs a decent amount of money (that I'd rather spent on vidya gaems) I would appreciate it if people who have taken the test could share their experiences here.

I have downloaded the free sample questions but only did the reading part so far. It was not that hard imho, I only fucked up the last question.

Do you think I can manage a decent score and what should I focus on in preparation for the test? Is the TOEFL online practice worth the price of admission? Do you get a lesser score on the speaking part when you have an accent?

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Took TOEFL and the SATs before coming to US

TOEFL was imho rather easy...I think when I took it my score was 634/677 or 643/677 or something like that. Basically you just need to stay calm while taking the test. Do sample tests and if you can find and read a TOEFL guide books too. It's helpful and will help build confidence. I can't really remember how long I spent getting ready for this tho..but I think a month or so should be good enough. Depending on your abilities (and you can gauge this with sample tests) might not even need that long

Best of luck

Is it better to go after TOEFL or IELTS for US?

TOEFL. My friends who went to Australia took the IELTS for example. When I got into Uni here I took the TOEFL first and the SATs after that. Universities here will let you take ESL classes if your score below their requirement too.

oh man I remember I wrote the SATs with a burning fever AND a cold haha

My girlfriend just studied up and took TOEFL (shes korean). Biggest thing to worry about is making sure your answers are clear and too the point. Make sure you speak for as much of the time you're given for each answer as possible on the speaking test. You lose marks for giving too short answers. Studdering and pausing loses you marks too. The accent doesn't make a difference unless it's so thick you're hard to understand. Trying to sound fancy by over complicating your answers with big words can bite you in the ass. You're graded more on pronounciation and fluency than vocabulary and complexity. She got a 110/120.
