Forums - Gaming - Gabe talks about gaming's future and hints at Steambox details coming soon!

I am interested in the device. I probably won't build a PC, but if this comes along as how I envision it, then I'll gladly add it to my PS4 and Wii U if the price is right.

Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS

I watched this whole video and half of it is interesting (the history of valve and console parts) while the other half I have to wonder if Gabe has lost his mind.

He talks about the fragmentation around mobile, living room and desktop computing because of "closed platform restrictions" and says how Steam big picture and Linux will bring it all together because they are open.

Has Gabe ever used the iOS or windows 8 software development SDK? I would say that he hasn't... Both SDKs are great in terms of cross platform support. Publishing a windows 8 desktop/tablet and Windows phone app is done simultaneously with 95% of the same code. Xbox One is will also most likely use this SDK and share app development...So there Microsoft should have the desktop, mobile and living room computing covered with absolutely no fragmentation and amazing development tools.

Now has Gabe used the Android SDK, a platform that is more or less "open"? I don't think he has because if he has, he would understand how much it sucks to have to develop for an open platform with no standardized hardware and software. Just ask ANY developer that has made quality iOS or windows 8 apps how they feel about Android and its "openness" and which is more fragmented to develop for.

Bottom line: You will get way more fragmentation on an open platform because there is no standardized requirements in terms of hardware and software.

Otherwise I am looking forward to seeing Gabes hardware solution to the PC crisis and the future of gaming.

He was talking about your content following wherever you go. He is saying that once you buy something you should be able to consume it on wharever you want. Hence why on steam you can buy a game once and play the Windows/Mac/Linux version, Portal 2 PS3 came with a PC version etc. Big picture and their efforts to bring PC to the living room is part of that. Naturally there are some UI and technological limitations but the idea is a noble one. Naturally closed platforms prevent thaat as they each have prepriatary store fronts, different certification proccesses etc that locks content into each ecosystem.

Whether that ideal will ever be achivable is another question entirely.

He clearly states at 21:40 mark about software and development fragmentation on closed platforms which is false.

The post you made is also something that he states, and while it sounds noble, you have to wonder how honest his motives are. He owns a proprietary storefront and is fighting tooth and nail to make sure this lives on in the wake of iOS, Android and Windows ecosystems.

He may talk about "openness", but Steam is as closed as Xbox Live, with 70/30 split royalties and I have a feeling that he knows that he can't fund a proprietary platform to compete with iOS, MS and Google, hence Linux is all he's got.

I already have a Steambox.

Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.

Fragmentatin in terms of of there being different closed platforms in the living room and mobile. He is advocating that having an open platform (eg Linux) wherever you are would allow developers to build once and consumers to take their content wherever. For example Linux bassed Steam box in the living room, Linux bassed tablets etc for mobile. Which would mean for example a game like Godus could be brought on Steam for example, and be played wherever you are. With the current models of being closed platforms in each space (Consoles, iOS etc) you would have a different product whever you are. I belive that the hardware he mentions there is probably the trackball bassed controler they patented for more mouse like control on the couch.

He has also said many times the end goal with Steam is to open it up as a set of APIs that would allow anyone to set up their own store front and put any software theyt  want on it. Naturally with a cut going to Valve as servers are expensive and they are still a business. The increased automation in the selection process that they have made in parallel to Greenlight is the first step towards that goal.
