Those keeping up to date on all things Xbox One will certainly have heard of the leaked video of the new dashboard in action. While we wait to see how Microsoft will respond to the leak, a close inspection of the video has revealed an as-yet-unannounced property that is already being referenced on the new console’s dash.
We don’t know if Savage Frontier is being kept secret for a specific reason, its notable placement in the Xbox One dashboard is worth a closer look. Specifically, because we have no information on what it could be.
It’s impossible to know exactly what the tile embedded in the Xbox One dashboard is referring to; Savage Frontier could be a game, an expansion, or any other piece of media. If it is a game, it’s still too early to tell if it will be a downloadable title, or a larger release that Microsoft has, for some reason, kept quiet.
Given that it happens to share the name of one of The Forgotten Realms‘ – a campaign setting for the original Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game – most popular stories, there are a few possibilities.
The iconic role-playing tabletop game has enjoyed a recent resurgence thanks to the free-to-play MMO Neverwinter, and other D&D campaigns have made their way onto Xbox Live in the past.
That being said, the miniscule image of the project in question seems to be more science-fiction than fantasy, containing a planet, a moon and fiery sun. It’s entirely possible that Microsoft is featuring a downloadable sci-fi title that has yet to be announced, but since they’ve been forthcoming about the rest of their launch titles, we have to wonder: why the secrecy?
We’re not claiming that Savage Frontier will prove to be a game-changer come launch time, since the other two games featured in the leaked video are Ryse: Son of Rome and Zoo Tycoon – two strong games, but neither predicted to be a system-seller.
Of course, there is always a chance for something surprising; nobody would have predicted the runaway success of Geometry Wars that followed the launch of the Xbox 360 – a promising creative team whose potential was cut short when Activision closed the studio. Several members of the team got a second chance when they joined up with Playground Games, and released the surprisingly successful, Xbox 360-exclusive-Forza Horizon.
We wouldn’t hold our breath for the team to take that relationship to the next level, but it’s certainly food for thought. We’ll keep you updated as more information on Savage Frontier arrives, but for now, give us your own theories and hopes in the comments below.
