Forums - General Discussion - My Potential New PC...input wanted!!

Ok, so I have had the same pc for the last 5 years. It's time to upgrade. I have spent the day browsing a few sites, mostly newegg.com, and have put together something that should be good for another 5 years. Well, I will want to get more memory, but, beyond that the rest should be ok. Oh, and when it is setup for media center I will be upgrading my wireless network to N.

* I will not be doing any gaming.
* I will be web developing with .NET
* I will be watching free porn. (who doesn't)
* I will eventually use it as a media center and DVR
* I will be using it for home business stuff and financials
* All prices from www.NewEgg.com

So, what's your thoughs?

I build computers, and i would recomend going wiht intel instead, on go with an 8600GTS graphics card its about 120$ and its faster but has less bandwith and works fine. go with 2 or 3 smaller hard drives, if you want this to last small hard dtives have longer life spans, i usually set 200GB as the max i would use. only use an SLi board if you need 2 graphics cards, there are many good single PCI express boards, and for a media center i would recomend this board because of the built in HD outputs. its also only about 90$
i actually cant find it, but its by asus and has the HD outputs and its pretty cheap.

What Operating System are you on now?

It's too much of a motherboard and videocard if you are not gonna do gaming. You can go cheaper on those ones.

Why Intel over AMD. From my experience AMD is cheaper, faster, runs hotter.

The GTS Video card is 256MB and only slightly faster clock, speed. Wouldn't the 2x memory out weigh the minor clock speed difference?

I'll have to look into the HDD size vs lifespan thing. I have never heard that.

I don't really need SLi, but, I was thinking of having it as I don't get new PC's for a long time. This way if I felt I need more video I could just get another card. But, I will look for other Asus with no SLi and compare the difference in price.

current OS is XP Home.

@fazz, I don't plan on buying again for 4/5 years, so I want to ensure the least likely reason to upgrade.

Go Linux Unbutu. Seriously. If you don't plan on gaming, Unbutu is god. Other than that it looks like a pretty spiffy setup :P

So, what's your thoughs?

1. get a motherboard that comes with/has a built in wireless adapter

2. get the samsung branded DVD drive. Its better and $3 cheaper.

3.  get an 4800+ or higher. I'm regreting my 4600+ since I could have got an 4800+ for $10 more

4. Vista Ultamite or the 64-bit editions arent needed unless you truly want it. Get Vista Premium or spend the damn money and get XP Pro (SP3 is coming).

 5. Consider an intel based system instead. The E8400, 2GB ram, XP Pro, an 8400GS, and a DVD drive is all you really would need.

Sorry, sticking with MS OS.

I think I may switch to this Motherboard though as I don't need SLi.

$79.99 ASUS M2N AM2 NVIDIA nForce 430 MCP ATX AMD Motherboard

That would save me another $50.
