Forums - Gaming - What does Sony/soft need to do to finally take Nintendo out this Gen?

I really don´t think they can do it.

They would need cheaper consoles and a big number of quality games about high, very high popular franchises to cather everyone´s attention, but no franchise currently can beat the likes of Mario, Zelda, Dk and other Nintendo franchises.

The only company that can take Nintendo out of the race is Nintendo themselves.
How would they do it? Manage the rest of Wii U's life as badly as they managed its first 9 months.

Pretty much this, that or the next handheld they release fails to keep with afloat.

Nintendo is in a much better financial situation than Sony so it's doubtful they would become 3rd party in the foreseeable future.

They would make a good partner for Microsoft though as they dominate Japan where the Xbox brand is weak and together they would likely completely dominate North America and have a very large share in Europe. If they could come to some kind of financial agreement it would be glorious, I'd love to see what Nintendo could do with Kinect for example and they would have both basis covered in terms of core and casual and young and old.

Yeah but sony doesnt need their gaming sector they have the hands in so many cookie jars they can take more risks.

Nintendo cant be taken out while they have billions in the bank and dominance in the handheld market.

Sony sure tries, but microsoft has no chance of accomplishing that. They are more likely to take each other out.

Speaking of which I wonder how long they are going to stay making a dedicated handheld system when it is easier for them to port their games to iOS, Android, and 2/3DS systems and make boatloads of money.   But that's a diffrent thread I don't want to derail this one.

There is nothing to back up the claim they will make tons of money by going iOS or Android. It seems really silly to suggest the company that dominates sales stop doing that and go in another direction.

Nintendo seem to be doing a good job of that all by themselves in the home console space, just like Sony and Sega were their own biggest enemy when they each ran into trouble. To keep themselves relevant I'd advise they get new management, a new long term strategy and spend more of those endless money reserves I keep hearing about.

Nintendo have too much money banked and are way too stubborn to stop making consoles :P Heck, the Gamecube sold 22 million vs the PS2's 158 million, and they still made another console, which actually went well.

I would rather they not

I doubt such a situation could be at all possible, or even very successful. Two companies running one closed platform is going to be a disaster from the start, especially two companies with such different ways of doing things.

The only combo I could see remotely working would be Sony/Nintendo and that's just because their methods and executions are more in line with each other (Sony also has a lot of IPs that appeal to Nintendo's market) and they are also both Japanese companies, which I imagine would also help.

Realistically though, both would likely fail.

i don't think sales affected wether they made a new console or not, but profits did, and Nintendo made more money in the GC+GBA era(their least profitable era) than Sony did with the PS2(their most profitable era), so if they make more money than the competition, why not? :P

Nintendo will never go third party.
