However, discounting Nintendo and assuming it's "Sony vs. MS" is also rather silly.

I actually disagree.
I believe that Nintendo has been in a steady death spiral since 2010. Not the company itself, but it's relevance within console sales. People here don't like to hear about the Wii being a fad, but that's precisely what it was. It was a fad, not a gaming phenomenon or permanent gaming platform. It was priced dirt cheap and provided an experience people never saw before. It provided an excellent secondary console to many hardcore gamers and brought in casual gamers to a degree. The Wii U, quite frankly doesn't bring anyting new to the table and doesn't do practically anything the others don't.
The reasons the PS4 will win this generation are simple.
1.) Price
2.) Early momentum
These two factors can only be de-railed if Sony has a complete dirth of games. (I'd place that probability of that as 100% unlikely).
The other factor is that the PS4 will control the US this generation (Price being a huge factor). The other factor is remebering that Xbox 360 owner are ready for an upgrade. Their console is a year older than the PS3 and is showing more age at this point. A cheaper entry console with arguably more power? Easy choice and will be an easy choice for parents too.
