Inferior HW never stopped PS1, PS2 and Wii from reaching 100 million in sales. Wii U is suffering from lack of games and lack of awareness.
Speaking of future HW, my idea is - and this is only an idea - they could make the portable and home console gaming work as one, not by releasing only one console, but by letting the next portable work as an actual gamepad (like Wii U`s gamepad). Sharing the same tech as the home console (could have more tech, but at least the same as the home console gamepad), would allow for Nintendo to release a SKU with just the actual console for like 200$.
That way it could attract a crowd that is not willing to pay 300-350, but could be swayed to pay 200 for a new portable and a year later, another 200 just for the actual console. That way it could have the best of two worlds and droughts would - for that specific crowd - would be pretty much non-existant. Not to mention that you would get a potential userbase of millions right there for the new console. A bigger crowd than the usual 300-350$ crowd.
At least, this is my dream! :D
In terms of using mobile, there`s always the chance of allowing purchases from VC games on mobiles and then allowing them to download for free if they have a 3DS or Wii U. And who knows, even sharing, between mobile and Nintendo`s HW, save files!

I don't think it's just lack of games and awareness. There is less appeal to the Wii U concept in general when compared with the Wii, and people don't "get it" in the same way when it is shown in advertising.
As for everything else you say, I agree 100%! The hybrid console idea is great, and probably what they are looking into after they merged the hardware teams. And while I agree with the VC on mobiles idea, I don't think many like the idea. I've mentioned it a couple of times, but it tends to get shot down as even a hint of NIntendo games not on a Nintendo platform is seen as pretty terrible. But in the case of the VC, these are old games that won't be making much on the Wii U, but can essentially advertise new games in the franchises by making the old ones available to a wider audience.

I know the Wii U isn`t pick up and play as Wii. Still, it has something that millions of consumers are already used to: touch screens.
What`s lacking is Nintendo`s ability to show that Wii U isn`t an add-on to Wii. Or like a retailer suggested: a Wi-Fi touchscreen controller for Wii (or something like that).
If they could change how Wii U look and start adds that really, really explain why Wii U is like no other - even showing how different it is from Wii - it could change perceptions.
Yeah, VC games could also work as a way of interesting non-Nintendo HW owners what they are missing on.
I doubt Nintendo would lose HW sales because VC games were to be released on other platforms. If they had that power, they already did so last generation - when VC games was a novelty.
