Glad to see WP continue to grow... Now if my bank, Sirius XM and Amazon would hurry and put out the apps I need my WP8 will have reached damn near perfection... Seriously even though MS is busy burying their XBOX brand they have really made a great phone platform not to mention the Surface is a great piece of hardware.

Makes me wonder why some apps or games go for iOS and bypass Andriod then. Had no idea market shares were that dramatic.

- Higher average selling prices
- Higher ad revenue
- No device fragmentation: make for one kind of thing and get all of the market
- Self-perpetuating: better tools, more developers, more experience, more known customers because iOS was more dominant in the past

Good information and makes sense.  I do wonder if this trend continues though might see those advantages not matter as much.  Shall see.


It's tough to say, because the emerging markets where Android is growing generally require different ways of doing business than the predominantly Western mobile developers that have dominated mobile so far. There are different costs, opportunities and cultural norms. Android may never 'steal' development resources from the iOS ecosystem, but rather grow it's own development community  focused on solving problems where Android is strongest (developing markets, budget-conscious users).

Android does seem to be narrowing the gap. A couple years ago iOS ecosystem revenues were estimated to be 10-20 times higher than Android. Indicators these days suggest iOS is 3-5 times larger.

But the other emerging trend is that in markets that are more saturated, affluent, and dominated by post-paid plans, Apple is actually pushing Android back:

It's a sign that while Android is better suited to seizing market share in a gold rush scenario, Apple is better equipped to steadily gain and retain users in the entrenched warfare of a saturated market.
