Yes, this is niche.

If you follow that logic, Microsoft should drop the console market altogether. I mean, the 360 didn't sell better than a handheld, and you consider handheld niche.

Why?

Because less and less money is there to be had, their product wouldn't be much different to the vita, and handhelds do poor in the west now (even 3DS) and given it wouldn't stand a chance in Japan, it would just be one big mistake.

Great analogy

Interesting

Ill thought about it

We are comparing mobile gaming platforms here to arrive at niche.  Mobile phones is a far bigger gaming platform than dedicated handhelds.

It is bigger than dedicated consoles too. What's your point?

Mobile gaming platofrms and home consoles are diferent markets. But you knew that, or you should.

It would seem that the handheld market and the mobile gaming market is different too. It's been quite profitable for Nintendo.

"little niche category"

13 Nintendo 3DS (3DS) 9.89 8.85 11.90 2.03 32.67 million units sold

....and 1 billion mobile phone are sold EVERY YEAR, 500m of which are smartphones

Yes, this is niche.

Sony have failed with Playstation behind it so it needs to be left alone by MS.

I'm happy playing spartan assault and other pick up and play titles on my phone.

ohhhhh, the typical "smart phones sell more" - argument.......wow...just wow....you seriously compare a product that doesn't even get bought primarly for gaming with the 3ds....people will do anything to downplay the 3ds success I guess

they already have and it's called windows phone. they just need to but a bit of effort into making game apps for the device leveraging some of their existing IPs.

spartan assault is a step in the right direction but MS should pump out at least 10 or so notable releases a year. development should be cheap so just the press around a release should be worth the investment for the windows phone platform.

Maybe in another time. Yes.
Now? No.
Foreseeable future? No.

It may be niche but that doesn't mean something bad! The 3DS is profitable for Nintendo right? So it doesn't matter if mobile phones can outsell the 3DS by 500m units!
