There is plenty of competition! Some of my favorite games last year were indie (Hotline Miami, TWD (not quite sure if this classifies)) and then there is always Minecraft, Braid, Bastion, Limbo, Journey etc. etc.

Agreed. To the Moon has a fantastic story but some of my favorite games this gen is indie/arcade including Trials Evolution, BattleBlock Theater, Castle Crashers, Minecraft, Bastion, and Fat Princess.

I also forgot some more really fun and fresh indies like: Super Meat Boy, Shatter, Orcs Must Die 1+2, Torchlight 1+2 (this is indie, right?), Trine 1+2, World of Goo, Amnesia: Dark Descent, Superbrothers, Killing Floor. I simply failed to love Braid, Trine 2, Super Meat Boy, World of Goo and Limbo. TWD wasn't my cup of tea either and I have not played Journey.
