They should advertise this once they get going

..or you could google around a little and discover that many systems like these have existed for years. All use standard webcams (a 3D camera is not required for this to work).

Which they mention in the video, but the problem is not all signs are 2D and not every sign can be discerned from another.

Awesome if your deaf!

Actually, awesome if you have a family member who is, because you can more easily speak with them.

If there was an application, say Skype, that provided voice to text/sign language and sign language to text/voice translation, you could use it to have a conversation with a family member instead of using TTY phone services/systems.

Is signing faster then typing and reading text? What's the advantage?
Is it true that there is only 1 universal sign language and you can communicate with everyone on the world who knows sign language. Or is that just a myth? If true, presto universal translator! Convert language A to sign language, convert back to language B...

Natural language is always faster than text.  Sign language, once learned, is a natural language and signers can sign with blazing speed.  If the translator (Kinect in this case) can interpret the signs as fast as someone can create them, then I think it'd replace TTY completely.

TTY being the current telecommunication means between the hearing and hearing impared.  The possible exception might be 911.

The fact that this was done with Kinect 1, not Kinect 2 is the amazing thing.

I'm really looking forward to the day when they can build Sign Translation into Skype.
