Lets start with what was fair, several reviewers noted that the controls were poor in a few sections of the game and a few thought they they were awkward from the beginning. The complaint about controls being awkard in certain sections of the game is definitely fair, the game's few free flight sections are a bit difficult to control and frankly the developers would have been better off desiging those sections on rails, fortunately there are only a few free flight sections in the game. Also, there are a few on-rails sections where the camera turns in such a way that it makes it more difficult to dodge attacks, fortunately there are only a few of those sections as well. The complaint about the controls being awkward from the beginning is less fair, but I can see why some critics thought that way. Their problem is with the fact that it's a twin stick rail shooter instead of a single stick rail shooter. If you prefer single stick rail shooters it would make sense that you'd find a twin stick layout awkward. I found the twin stick controls difficult at first, near the beginning I was almost starting to lament my purchase because it was taking me awhile to get used to aiming and moving with seperate sticks, but once I got the hang of it I realized that the twin stick design is superior, as it allows you to keep firing while you dodge attacks. Next are the complaints that were fair but have since been fixed by the developers. One of the chief complaints is that the game was very difficult, the developers have since made the game easier for those who don't like a challenge, but for those that do, it's still possible to make the game more challenging by putting it on the classic difficulty setting, doing missions without ampoules (1 mission stat boosts that you get as drops or buy from stores), doing missions without wingmen (AI companions) or with weaker wingmen, or by simply doing missions when you're underlevelled for them. In others words, the game is now as difficult or as easy as you want it to be, the way that games should be imo. Another complaint was that the game feels grindy in certain sections, as you had to replay certain missions in order to level up enough to complete future missions, the developers have since adjusted missions rewards so that player levelling is mostly on pace with mission levelling. However, you do still have to replay certain missions whenever you evolve your dragon. Each dragon's level maxes out at 10, and in order to increase it's stats further you have to evolve your dragon with rare components found by killing rare creatures in missions (gold starred enemies) or by buying them in the store, each evolution resets your dragon's level but gives them higher starting stats and larger stat boosts from each level up, you need to evolve 3 times in order to max out your dragon (neccessary for the last few missions), so there is still some grinding in the game. Also, if you decide to change to a different dragon other than the starting dragon (I personally waited until I unlocked the last dragon in the game and switched to it) you have to go through the levelling and evolving proccess all over again for that dragon. Fortunately, enemies drop food that you can feed your dragons for XP, so that does help speed up levelling some. Last are the criticisms that I don't think were fair. Firstly, one critic said that the music was unremarkable, I disagree vehemently, in fact it's one of my top 3 soundtracks of 2013. Several reviewers complained about the games graphics, saying that they weren't next-gen. I found this to be a silly complaint considering the fact that the game was designed for the 360 initially, of course it's not going to look next-gen. General Comments: -The art design is fantastic overall, a few environments and enemy types look plain, but certain environments, most player dragons, and most enemy types are very creative and/or beautiful. -The story is nothing to write home about. The plot starts off kind of slow, gets mush better after about the halfway point, and finishes with a partially dissapointing ending. The story is delivered through some fairly average voice acting. -There are a ton of different skills that you can unlock for your dragons (obtained through drops from missions or by buying item packs in the store). -There are 6 different playable dragons (one of which was an early purchase dragon which I don't think is available anymore). I went with the last dragon unlocked, a wind dragon which was very agile and had a large mind pool (a pool of points that your secondary attack uses), but had mediocre attack and defense stats, and came with a primary attack that is very easy to use (hold the trigger and aim in the general direction of enemies). Playable dragons and enemies each have an element, fire, wind, light, and dark. Fire, wind, and light work in a triagle with each type being strong against one element and weak against another. I believe Dark is well rounded and is neither strong nor weak aginst any other type. You can teach a dragon secondary skills from opposing elements, which can help counteract the elemental damage triangle for attacks but does nothing for defense against your weak element (a defense ampoule helps you there). Score Art design- 9 Final Score- 8/10 |
Wow... thanks for that incredible amount of feedback. I'm defintely going to give it a chance and buy it when I have time and less One games to play. It's $20 with ~7 GB. I'm glad to hear that the frustrating parts are minimal. I mean I played Kid Icarus Uprising (probably not the same), but the controls in that game took some time to get used to. Difficulty is something I'll just have to get used to as well. So the more I play and don't rage quit, the better I'll get (maybe).
It's nice to see the developers respons to feedback and give us options. Grinding is another thing that's no big deal for me unless the game is dull. And with the complaints of it not looking next gen, that seem weak to me. Like you said, it was designed as a 360 game priced at $20. Again thanks a lot for all you gave me and this will make my purchase feel more secure!
