Forums - Sony - MAG, SOCOM servers shutting down 01/28/14

Sony kept the servers for the original Socoms (ps2) online for 10 years and just shut them down in the last year or two. The Socom name is pretty much dead at this point. However, H-Hour (the spiritual successor to the originals) is being made for the ps4/pc and will be out in 2015.

I've almost bought MAG for ~ £1.50 in CEX on multiple occasions. Might actually pick it up now (gasp) just so I can play it before it disappears.

Didn't know SOCOM 4 was still up actually - I hear it's been dead for years, pretty much. Confrontation seemed to have a dedicated group who still played though, which is a shame. Same for MAG from what I hear.

damn this reminds me when Konami took Metal Gear Online, offline. :(

MAG is multiplayer only just checked amazon they still sell this game even a special edition for 45, I wonder how they will handle that.

Thus the reason I'm not paying $60 for online only games.

Are they really online only, can they not be played over lan or something??

I liked MAG. I hope if Sony revives the franchise, they would make it available on the PC and make it cross-play with the PS4 and even make it F2P, if it catches their fancy.

Going to see many more games like that this generation.

I wouldn't say it's wise to buy one that doesn't have a big community even if they didn't shut down, as the people won't be there. Games that are big are likely to be supported for a long time, so it's not major. Still though if it renders something you bought useless Sony ect should offer some sort of compo.

You'll never see that happen. MMOs shut down all the time, and they don't compensate players for subscription fees or purchase fees.
