Is it OK to have games use multiple DVDs? Yes. Should you have to pay extra, upfront, to store up to 50Gigs per disc, just incase you need the space? I personally don't feel comfortable with that. I would rather have my console use multiple DVDs rather than putting an expensive new disk drive in my gaming system, just so I don't have to change the discs. |
Very fair point. That's why David Jaffe suggested that perhaps the PS3 would have done better without the blu-ray drive. However, when the number of discs approach 4 or 5 the costs increase and really who wants a game like that? I have Baldur's Gate 1 for the PC and I believe that thing was 6 discs. That was really annoying. Thankfully BG2 was on DVD (may have been optional I believe...DVD was just catching on).
So, I think $200 now is worth the extra space. Movie DVDs already span multiple blu-ray discs.
I would like to make the point, however, that you get more for that $200 than just the blu-ray drive. Free online games, wireless. It's only $120 more than the Elite, too.
To the point of the thread, though: If games can be that small then developers must all suck. I don't think they do, and I think developers appreciate extra space. http://kotaku.com/gaming/uh%2C-oh/rockstar-gtaiv-limited-by-360-257184.php shows that the 360 provides limitations by not having that extra space.
Also, shams, I think the space needed increases faster than compression.
