JRPGs, hands down, eyes closed. No WRPG I have ever played has ever hooked me in like games such as Persona, Pokemon and many others.

I get that WRPGs let you build your own characters, but by the end of Persona 3 and 4, I actually CARED for the characters I played with. I felt like I actually truly knew and understood these characters as I knew my friends in real life. I may not have decided where their story went, but their story just grabbed me and made me a part of it. There's just nothing that compares to it. Nothing.

Just curious, what WRPGs have you played?

Mass Effect (1st One), Skyrim, Kingdoms of Amalur, Fallout 3, Fable 2 and probably a few more I can't remember from older gens. I didn't like any of them too much and left them unfinished at some point since I personally don't see any point in playing a game that I don't enjoy.

Thank you VGChartz for restoring my faith in the internet.
JRPG = Novel
WRPG = Create/Choose your own adventure book.

While Creating your own adventure can be a hell of a lot of fun (I used to go through those damn books for DAYS), I still read many many many more novels. There are just things you cannot do in a create your own adventure book that you can in a good ol' novel.

As they say, different strokes for different folks, those are mostly all pretty good games, not so much as some older ones from cRPG golden age, but still very good in their sub-genres.

But, I do understand your point - for example, I really tried to play couple of FFs, Eartbound, Chrono Trigger and few others, couldn't make myself to play for more than 2-3 days each (luckily I have a friend who loves them, so I can borrow them whenever I feel like trying something new). I think it's probably cultural thing with me, I mostly dislike anime, and most of stereotypes it brings - well, except for Ghibli, so I'll definitely have to pick up Ni No Kuni eventually.

Other thing probably comes from classic pen&paper RPG tradition - while I care for stories and characters in RPGs (and there are a lot WRPGs with exceptional), I much more care for world and completely different ways you can play. Fallout 1/2 being great example how you can get through most of the game with talking/sneaking instead of fighting, if you've built your character that way - not to mention Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, where gameplay is very different depending on what character you decide to play with.

Why don't you just play P&C adveture games then? I find that genre to be superior to both WRPG/JRPG when it comes to stories and characters.

I really hope you do not mean Point and Click Adventure games.

Did you not see the very large Sierra + Dosbox images in my sig?

Yeah, I do mean them (and all that preceded them of course). I keep sigs turned off, so I missed that.

Glad to see more fans of the genre around, nothing beats good old adventures, in my opinion.

And yes ladies & gentleman as of now over two hundred people the 70%+ of total voters vote for JRPGs showing with their actions 1st that JRPGs is in their opinion much more fun & enjoyable to play & 2nd that vgchartz is a place full of JRPG fanatics, after seeing that I want to say that I'm happy to be here :) rejoice brothers WE WON! :P

I used to say JRPGS, in the 90s they were the original open world games, FF7 was ground breaking moment in gaming for me, but since 2000 onwards they see to have turned into linear and bore fests in terms of inovative gameplay on the whole with very few exceptions.

WRPGS have come on a lot since then, showing massive open world games like skyrim and dragon age, although i find the characters in western ones to be a lot more forgettable as they let you design your own charcter from scratch and no matter what you do there just bland featureless faces.

Fire Emblem: Awakening, Skyward Sword, Ni No Kuni, and The Last Story are some recent examples of good jrpgs.

Most of the really good jrpgs nowadays just dont get enough recognition

Yeah i recently finished Ni No Kuni and enjoyed that, havent got any nintendo platforms at the moment, but there are a few games like the ones u mentioned that are on my must by list when i do.
