Brasil doesn't hate games, the government does

This is the point .

Our "super-smart" Minister of Culture recentely said that games can´t even be considered cultural products... in a time when even Obama considered gaming development as a possible subject on high school.

The overtax videogames and tech products but don´t offer any incentives for the industry to develop here. That´s just dumb. Our government still is ages from modernity

That is pretty steep. I guess agitating for change won't do much good as the numba of console gamers probably isn't that high in Brazil.

with these Taxes isn't a surprise is not that high...

But really is pretty stupid how Videogames are expensier than alcoholic drinks...

Well it looks like the Xbone in my country is the 3rd most expensive in the world. On the other hand, we have rather high salaries. My salary is slightly above average at best and the Xbone would cost me roughly 12-15% of a monthly income after taxes. (Not that I'm buying one though). What does an average brazilian earn?

Well, in 2011 the average salary here (Brazil) was R$ 1.792,61 (U$ 797/month, nowadays) and the minimum wage today is R$ 678 (U$ 304/month):

Xbox One: R$ 2200 (U$ 979) = 122% of our average salary... or 324% of our minimum wage.

The games are also very expensive, so you can see why Brazil is not a huge market yet. It's not that we don't like playing, 'cause we love it. Basically, most people just can't afford it.

Brazilian Gamer;

PC, 3DS, PS3, Wii

I just read all this and I hope the status quo is not maintained in Brazil and the people of Brazil get what they need from the protests. The tax’s on everything is almost daylight robbery! As for the price of a console that is just crazy, when you have SONY talking to the government to try to sell their product for less in the country you can see it’s a messed up situation.

On another brighter note the Brazilian football team and the crowd was imo fantastic in the Confederations cup, deserved winners, I would love to see my country England play with such passion, determination and skill, so it’s not all bad Brazil :)

Not like most of them can afford video games though

The thing is: we don´t give a shit here. If we really want a console, we freaking buy it with a payment plan or something, and then work our asses to pay it.

I had a friend who made around 300 U$D a month, really poor kid. He bought a PS3 for U$D 600 and payed selling ice cream and chocolates door to door while working at weekends in a autoshop, besides his regular job.

Pretty brave kid, kinda dumb, but a brave one.

I gave him a couple of my games out of simpathy, Mercenaires 2 and Tomb Raider Underworld.

I respect people like that. We are all appreciate things if we work hard for them. Hell, i saved up for nearly a whole year to get my PS3. I got the money from a paper round i did and even now the money i earn from that little job is paying for stuff i want. I don't earn much but it's enough to not rely on my parent's money.

Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch (+ Many Retro Consoles)

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

What do you mean? Our country is ripped off when it comes to taxes especially VAT, not so much on entertainment but everything else is expensive

It´s not just about videogames... it´s about almost everything.... from air tickets to fruits and sneakers. Everything tech-related is very expensive in Brazil, computers, cell phones, game consoles....

It´s no wonder why Brazilians lately are so angry with their government and are doing lots and lots of protests. Too many taxes and zero investment in infrasctructure, social services and State modernization.

Computers are in a 25% tax rate though, I think some Computer stores have a pretty big profit margin in here =/

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

Love to read that, hard honest work is such a noble thing, doesn´t matter which country you live in.
