Paradox pride themselves on making games “that are not for everyone”. Nothing may have illustrated that more than my brief hands-off demo of the upcoming World War 2 grand strategy game, Hearts of Iron 4. Paradox gave us a presentation only a wargaming die-hard could love. And love it I did.

It’s difficult enough for the Dota 2 community to acclimatise to change - and that game was released six months ago. How might Valve go about slotting brand new maps into Counter-Strike, a game rounded into perfection after fifteen years of gun chatter, like a pebble in the ocean?
Valve dodge the difficult decisions, if not the accountability, by deferring to cold, cruel numbers. Is the daringly new Overpass a match for the exquisite balance of a Dust or Mirage? The numbers cannot and will not lie.

I think I’ve worked out just how it is Chucklefish keep up their unmatched rate of development on Starbound. They’ve extra incentive to retain the game’s upward trajectory, I’ve theorised, because as soon as their nose dips they’ll feel obliged to change its name to ‘Earthbound’, and thereupon enter a protracted legal dispute with friends of David Morrissey, the monstrous Governor from TV’s Walking Dead.
Nobody wants that. And so among the many improvements in today’s update comes "massive changes to disk serialization" - which means, apparently, an end to character wipes.

He said it in pictures before Christmas; now he’s doing it in words. Braid brain Jon Blow has been sufficiently impressed by Valve’s in-house VR tech to adapt his new first-person puzzle game for magic goggles.
"It isn't just a matter of the system being very immersive (which it is),” said Blow. “But that it can take video games in general to a new place.”

Ah, Chinese New Year - when British weather, having failed to fill its drama quota before Christmas, busies the days with lashes of lightning, the pavements with ice caltrops, and the news with threats of flooding to go with all the flooding. And then, of course, the wild energies that’ve hibernated through the winter months begin to pool and congeal into the Year Beast, a sort of bull with extra horn attachments. Terrible business.
What’s attached can be removed, though, and astonishingly rare and powerful materials await the summoner capable of making the fell Beast fall.

You’re only seeing things from one angle. That’s a fact Riot are continually trying to remind their most sweary and hostile players of in the tribunal - but it’s also literally true of League of Legends, which presents its 3D world from a fixed point in the sky.
That’s beginning to bother players who believe they’re at their competitive peak when fighting up lanes, or down lanes, or speculate they might be at their best when viewed diagonally. Riot are working on a solution for them - but they won’t be freeing the camera from its restraints, an idea that “seems more simple than it actually is”.

Excuse me sir, do you have a minute to answer a couple of quick questions? Firstly, would you rather radiate an aura of hatred at all times, or summon an evil pet that only you can see? Would you say you’re better at bringing down loathing on your enemies, or drawing upon powerful reserves of your own resentment when backed into a corner?
Diablo III polls are a bit weird. But they’ve allowed tens of thousands of players to pick over and decide on the specifics of a new Legendary weapon. And they’ve decided to make it hate.

“Reget is psychological survival-horror,” writes the game’s developer, Aivars Priedītis. “That means - even if you have a gun, you’ll be happy that you’ve just found two bullets.”
You’ll fight monsters in the dark and your psyche will take as much of a pounding as your body. That’s what Curo, your fox, is for. You need each other to get through the more brain scraping bits of horror.
It’s due out this year and it looks stunning.

Unreal Engine 4 licensees are mostly working on brand new properties rather than sequels, Epic’s Mike Gamble has said.
VG247's new design doesn't really work well for this, I guess I could do it like this
Unreal Engine 4: majority of in-development titles are new IP, says Epic boss
Unreal Engine 4 licensees are mostly working on brand new properties rather than sequels, Epic’s Mike Gamble has said.
Speaking with Edge, the European territory manager said that there are lots of unannounced Unreal Engine 4 games in development, and of these, the ratio of sequels to new IP is “at least 50/50″.
“If not 70/30 in favour of new stuff,” he added.
