SALES /PLAYER COUNT & DEALS

GOG has two new Deals of the Day, that will last 46 hours:

Steam has four new deals:

The Humble Store presents the Techland Puvlisher Sale, with up to 90% discounts during 4 days: https://www.humblebundle.com/store/promo/techland-publisher-sale-may-2024/.

And Fanatical’s Star Deal is Scars Above, 85% off. It started yesterday but it will last another 24 hours: https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/scars-above.

SOFTWARE & DRIVERS

You can't take it with you, but you can't leave it for someone else either: Valve says you aren't allowed to bequeath a Steam account in a will
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/you-cant-take-it-with-you-but-you-cant-leave-it-behind-either-valve-says-you-arent-allowed-to-bequeath-a-steam-account-in-a-will/
First reported by Ars Technica, ResetEra user delete12345 has made an interesting discovery about Steam libraries: we're not allowed to bequeath them to our loved ones in the event of our untimely passing.
Delete12345 asked Steam Support about the hypothetical scenario, and got a clear, professional, but very disappointing response. "Unfortunately, Steam accounts and games are non-transferable," the support rep explained. "Steam Support can't provide someone else with access to the account or merge its access to another account.
"I regret to inform you that your Steam account cannot be transferred via a will."
Now, I was going to suggest that you can just give your designated heir the Steam login and password without getting lawyers involved—barring a sudden tragedy or Knives Out-style scenario where your grasping heirs are at each other's throats trying to secure your estate, that should work perfectly fine. But it turns out that would be in flagrant violation of the Steam Subscriber Agreement

MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

This Elden Ring Mod allows you to play as Kratos from God of War with his iconic Blades of Chaos, a custom moveset, weapon skill, icons, descriptions and more
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/this-elden-ring-mod-allows-you-to-play-as-kratos-from-god-of-war-with-his-iconic-blades-of-chaos-a-custom-moveset-weapon-skill-icons-descriptions-and-more/
Elden Ring and God of War fans, get ready for a treat. Modder ‘MarkusRollo’ has released a mod that allows you to play as Kratos (from the original God of War trilogy) in FromSoftware’s action RPG, Elden Ring.
Now what’s cool about this mod is that it’s not a simple character swap mod. Oh no. This mod comes with a custom moveset, weapon skill, icons, descriptions and more. And yes, you will also be able to use Kratos’ iconic Blades of Chaos.
Going into more details, the Blades of Chaos have two-handed and one-handed moves. Moreover, they have a new Weapon Skill for Kratos, called Spartan Slam. Additionally, the Blades have custom weapon sheathing properties on the back of the character, as shown in the God of War games. Not only that but the Blades of Chaos have custom attack and defense parameters and can be upgraded with Somber Smithing Stones. They will also scale with Strength, Dexerity, and Faith.
In short, this is a must-have mod for all our God of War fans. This will let you become Kratos himself in Elden Ring. Thus, it will offer a unique and enjoyable playthrough.

Here’s Half-Life 2: Episode 1 & Episode 2 with RTX Remix Path Tracing
https://www.dsogaming.com/videotrailer-news/heres-half-life-2-episode-1-episode-2-with-rtx-remix-path-tracing/
YouTube’s ‘skurtyyskirts’ has shared two videos, showcasing early versions of RTX Remix Mods for both Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two.
Since these mods are still in WIP, they do not represent the quality of their final versions. You can’t even download them. And, as you will see, right now they have some glaring issues.

After 8 months and 1000+ hours of work, Dark Souls Re-Remastered is complete
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/after-8-months-and-1000-hours-of-work-dark-souls-re-remastered-is-complete/
Modder ‘fromsoftserve’ has been working on a major graphics overhaul mod for Dark Souls Remastered, called Dark Souls Re-Remastered. And today, after 8 months and over 1000 hours of work, this mod reached its V1.0 version.
While the mod can now be considered complete, fromsoftserve will still release some updates for it. My guess is that these updates will fix some issues that passed under the modder’s nose.
Dark Souls Re-Remastered adds dynamic shadows to every map. For those unaware, most DS1 shadows were baked in it. So, this mod adds dynamic ones which are far more accurate and include way more objects too. Additionally, the mod restores the PTDE lighting to every map. Not only that but it upscales almost every texture, most of which are ported from PTDE. That’s both for environments and armors/weapons. Thus, the game will now look sharper.
It’s also worth noting that Dark Souls Re-Remastered generates new normal maps for most surfaces, and adds parallax occlusion mapping to more surfaces. It also brings better water reflections and better distant geometry.
And that’s not all. The mod adds more grass in Undead Burg, Firelink Shrine, and other places. It also fixes mesh holes that were present in many mappieces. Shadows are now of higher resolution, and there is better AO on the player lantern. Finally, the mod adjusts the Depth of Field effect so it’s closer to how PTDE used it.
>> There’s a 2 minutes video of the mod.

Someone is reverse-engineering Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2 on PC
https://www.dsogaming.com/videotrailer-news/someone-is-reverse-engineering-resident-evil-outbreak-file-2-on-pc/
Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2 is a survival horror RE game that came out exclusively on PlayStation 2 in 2004. This game never found its way to the PC. And now, almost two decades afterward, we can take a glimpse at what a PC version of it could have looked like.
X’s Fothsid is working on a PC version of the game by reverse-engineering it. And earlier today, he shared a gameplay video showing how the game can run at 60fps. As noted, this isn’t an emulated version of Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2. It’s a version that Fothsid has reverse-engineered to run natively on PC. And it looks super cool.
>> The video, from Twitter, is less than one minute long.

The second unofficial PC port for The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask has been released for free
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/the-second-unofficial-pc-port-for-the-legend-of-zelda-majoras-mask-has-been-released-for-free/
The team behind the unofficial PC port for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Ship of Harkinian, has released an unofficial PC port for The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. This is the second unofficial PC port of this Nintendo 64 Zelda game, allowing you to play it natively on the PC. So, make sure to check it out. It’s a really cool project.
This second PC port of Majora’s Mask is called 2Ship2Harkinian. According to the devs, the entire game is 100% playable and finishable. Plus, it has a few enhancements and additions.
2Ship2Harkinian supports high framerates and widescreen resolutions. You can change many graphic settings, just like in Ship of Harkinian. It also lets you invert the camera controls, has autosaving, and a free look mode. You can also make your character climb faster and even play as Kafei.
And that’s not all. This second PC version of Majora’s Mask has faster mask transformations and a bow reticle for easier aiming. It will also work with both N64 1.0 USA and GameCube USA ROMs. Plus, you can speed up text and hold B to skip to the next textbox even faster.
>> There’s also a less than one minute video of this port.

Arrowhead initially planned to make Helldivers 2 in 3 years—instead it took 7 years, 11 months, and 26 days, but 'grit, camaraderie and compassion' saw the team through

"We got asked if we wanted to do a sequel to Helldivers, and we said 'yeah, I think that sounds like a lot of fun, because it'll be easy'. We already know the game … could probably do it in [three years]," reveals Pilestedt, before clicking to the next slide where a giant 'WRONG' stamp layers over his presentation. "Yeah. This was wrong. That's an incorrect assumption."
Pilestedt proceeds to drop the 500kg bomb that Helldivers 2 took, instead, 7 years, 11 months, and 26 days to create—over twice as long as the intended development time.

Over 90 Deadlock videos have now leaked, but Valve's still acting like nothing's happened
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/over-90-deadlock-videos-have-now-leaked-but-valves-still-acting-like-nothings-happened/
Over the last week stills and clips of a game called Deadlock, which is claimed to be the next big game from Valve, have been leaking online. The 6v6 hero shooter is either legit or an extremely good fake, and the latter's looking increasingly unlikely with the volume of material that's been released: today, there's more. PC Gamer has contacted Valve for comment but, so far, there's no response.

https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/hold-fast-warhammer-40k-rogue-trader-is-getting-its-mutinous-first-expansion/
Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader's first DLC is releasing on August 8, themed around a heretical conspiracy turned crisis unfolding on the lower decks that demands not only the Captain's attention, but the Inquisition's as well. The under-a-minute trailer above gives us a glimpse of our new allies and foes, an Inquisitorial retinue and nascent Genestealer Cult, respectively.

Hyper Light Breaker dev opens up about the stress of depending on a publisher under the corporate carousel of acquisitions, layoffs and closures: 'I don't know who I'm going to be working with in a few months'

Hyper Light Breaker, the imminent sequel to Hyper Light Drifter, is one of those sequels that over-reaches itself. The ambition is simple: Take the immaculate vibes and stylish combat of the top-down isometric original, and do it all bigger and better in full 3D. The game is due to release in early access this year, though there's no firm date yet, and going by what we've played there's a good chance developer Heart Machine is going to pull it off.

In the runup to its initial release, Heart Machine's been taking part in a documentary by the excellent NoClip, during which the studio's founder and Hyper Light Breaker's creative director Alx Preston opens up about the anxieties of living under a corporate merry-go-round of cash and closures that may well one day drop an anvil on you (first spotted by GamesRadar+).

Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann is a big fan of generative AI: 'With AI, your creativity sets the limits'
https://www.pcgamer.com/software/ai/naughty-dogs-neil-druckmann-is-a-big-fan-of-generative-ai-with-ai-your-creativity-sets-the-limits/
I'll be blunt: I'm not entirely clear on what artificial intelligence as we understand it today really even is. I suspect it's rather like the metaverse—that is, too loosely defined to really be meaningful as a term—although for a more nuanced take on that perspective you should probably take a look at hardware writer Nick Evanson's evaluation of where things currently stand with the race for "artificial general intelligence."
Naughty Dog studio boss Neil Druckmann seems considerably more upbeat about it than I am, however, saying in a new Sony interview that the advent of generative AI is "opening the door for us to take on more adventurous projects and push the boundaries of storytelling in games."
Recent updates
While Neil Druckmann's observations on AI still seem to stand, the developer took to Twitter yesterday to contest one of the more controversial statements attributed to him in the Sony interview, that Naughty Dog's next game "could redefine mainstream perceptions of gaming."

Bungie wins a little walkin' around money in first of its kind jury trial against Destiny 2 cheat maker, but the victory will likely make it even easier for game companies to keep taking cheaters to court

First reported by independent journalist and former Kotaku editor-in-chief Stephen Totilo, Bungie has won its lawsuit against cheat maker Phoenix Digital (also known as AimJunkies). The first of its kind jury trial rewarded $63,210 in damages to Bungie—a rounding error for a company of this size—but it more importantly sets a new legal precedent supporting game studios looking to sue cheat makers—or, more worryingly, anyone who violates a company's copyright by modifying its games.

With a new edition on the way, the current version of life-devouring fantasy board game Talisman goes free to play
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/board-games/with-a-new-edition-on-the-way-the-current-version-of-life-devouring-fantasy-board-game-talisman-goes-free-to-play/
Talisman is a powerfully silly fantasy board game originally published by Games Workshop in 1983—its original inspiration was a game about teachers competing to become school principal—which has gone through several editions and publishers over the years. The fourth edition by Black Industries, later revised and reprinted by Fantasy Flight Games, was also translated into Talisman: Digital Edition by Nomad Games and released on PC in 2014. In the decade since then it's received multiple expansions, but as of now the base game is available for free on Steam and GOG.

Valve casually upends the Dota 2 meta by adding innate powers to all 124 heroes

Dota 2 has gotten a particularly game-bending update this month. Despite its simple name, Gameplay Update 7.36 has changed how all 124 heroes in Dota 2 play by fundamentally tweaking the structure of a character: Every single hero now has an innate ability of some kind, up from a mere... 7 heroes before. To boot, every single hero now has two Facets, a  binary choice of gameplay styles or bonuses that you choose before the match even starts.

Rooftops & Alleys: The Parkour Game is a sport game focused entirely on the experience of parkour and freerunning—which is to say it's not also a shooter or a game about stabby people in hoods.

Baldur's Gate 3 head writer reveals we almost got to revisit the first game's 'academic dungeon' prologue area, Candlekeep
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/baldurs-gate-3-head-writer-reveals-wea-almost-got-to-revisit-the-first-games-academic-dungeon-prologue-area-candlekeep/
Remember Candlekeep? The monastic library-fortress was the first area of the original Baldur's Gate, a place for introductory sidequests like curing a sick cow, finding a book in a haystack, and murdering rats in a storehouse. (...)
While you do get to return to Candlekeep in chapter six of Baldur's Gate, we almost got to revisit it again in Baldur's Gate 3. "I had a bunch of ideas for it," lead writer Adam Smith told Rock Paper Shotgun. "I think that it's a good setting, partly because it's going back to where it all began. So that was always compelling. But also because you get an academic dungeon, and there's something interesting about that kind of library dungeon. It's vast, you know, within the lore. And the idea of having this place where you need to go to do research or something, or you need to go down into it. And then you also say, well, this is where the Bhaalspawn was raised—you know, it's very, very attractive."

Larian Studios' CEO Swen Vincke has revealed the developer had to do "a bit of crunch" to finish its beloved RPG Baldur's Gate 3, but the amount was "certainly less" than the studio has done on previous projects.

Game Dev Tycoon was a bit of a phenomenon back in the day. Released in 2012, Greenheart Games' first major title quickly achieved viral success due, in part, to being a neat little management game about the industry itself—making it a popular choice for YouTubers and streamers.
Over a decade later, the studio's ready to put its next game out into the wild: Tavern Keeper, a game about, well, keeping taverns.

Helldivers 2's community has once again liberated a new vehicle stratagem from the tin-can clutches of the automatons, wresting control of the robot Petafactory on the planet Varylia 5 and converting it to produce Emancipator exosuits. This new mech comes in a fetching yellow paint job, and is armed with twin autocannons perfect for pulverizing the enemies of Managed Democracy into mulch.

For a moment I thought they were the desktop parts, but it's "only" the mobile Strix Point mobile parts. Well, at least we'll get some comparison with the 7000 and 8000 mobile parts and we'll be able to get some idea of what kind of performance improvements we may get on the desktop parts.

Tomb Raider I-III Remastered and Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor were big commercial successes for Embracer
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/tomb-raider-i-iii-remastered-and-deep-rock-galactic-survivor-were-big-commercial-successes-for-embracer/
Embracer Group has shared details about the sales performance of some of its latest games. According to the company, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered and Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor sold well on all platforms, and they exceeded Embracer’s expectations.
(...)
On the other hand, the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection had major issues when it launched. Even to this day, PC gamers are not happy with its state. The collection has Mostly Negative Reviews overall on Steam (and Overwhelming Negative Recent Reviews). Despite that, though, Embracer stated that it performed in line with management expectations.
Similarly, Lightyear Frontier performed within Embracer’s expectations. Lightyear Frontier is a peaceful open-world farming adventure that is available in Early Access. The game also currently has Very Positive Reviews on Steam.
The games that underperformed for Embracer were Alone in the Dark Remake and Outcast: A New Beginning. While both of these games have positive reviews on Steam, they failed to meet Embracer’s expectations. In short, they were commercial flops. That’s kind of a bummer as there was a lot of potential for the new Outcast game. Despite that, though, it launched with both technical and gameplay issues.

Mass Effect and Fallout 4 fans, get ready for a treat. After six years of development, modder ‘Tamlers’ released the Mass Effect Evolution Mod for Fallout 4.
Going into more details, Mass Effect Evolution can be considered as a total conversion mod. It brings weapons, armor, ships, objects and characters from Mass Effect to Bethesda’s RPG. Not only that but it packs a custom storyline. Compared to the original Mass Effect game, Mass Effect Evolution packs a different timeline, plot and gameplay.
For those wondering, most of the plot is a rewrite of the original Fallout 4 plot, with some new quests and opportunities. In future versions, the modder hopes to add another storyline.
At the moment, the mod replaces most of the models with ones from the Mass Effect universe. Additionally, the modder has redrawn most of the environments, animated objects, armors, buildings, etc. by hand. And yes, most of the weapons were replaced with what was in Mass effect with custom models.
While Mass Effect Evolution is not 100% complete yet, it’s very close to it. This is the main reason why the modder decided to finally release it. Yes, there are some bugs here and there, but you can play it from start to finish. And, let’s be realistic here. For a one-man job, this is might impressive.

Rainbow Six Siege fans roundly boo the announcement of a new monthly subscription service

Rainbow Six Siege has been an ongoing success for Ubisoft for nearly a decade now, and shows no sign of slowing down—it was just in March, in fact, that the game set a new all-time concurrent player record on Steam of more than 201,000. But not everyone is thrilled with the weekend announcement of a new subscription service for Siege called R6 Membership, which promises exclusive content drops, animated skins, and premium battle pass access for $10 per month.

Super Earth scientists 'spaghettified' in Dark Fluid research incident: Here's why that's good news for Helldivers 2 players
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/super-earth-scientists-spaghettified-in-dark-fluid-research-incident-heres-why-thats-good-news-for-helldivers-2-players/
There's good news and bad news for Helldivers 2 players, although in this case they're basically the same thing. The bad news is that 12 Super Earth scientists at a Dark Fluid Research Facility were, uh, "spaghettified" after the volatile material suddenly and without warning collapsed into a "micro black hole." The good news is that this unfortunate incident has some players convinced that the arrival of the Illuminate, the so-far-absent third enemy faction in Helldivers 2, is imminent.

Farmers who 'killed an unreasonably large number of Gulp Frogs' for bronze and power have had their demi-godhood stripped from them in WoW's Mists of Pandaria: Remix

The present Mists of Pandaria: Remix discourse centres around a humble frog that spawned a week-and-a-bit long saga filled with cloaks bestowing god-like power and hopping-mad players who missed the boat. Possibly appropriate for a time-travelling event like this, Blizzard has now attempted to turn back the clock.

The Rogue Prince of Persia, a new roguelike from the folks who made Dead Cells, is out in early access—and boy can that prince already schmoove

If you know me (statistically speaking, you don't) you'll remember that I like a good roguelike. I've recently had my entire existence absorbed by Hades 2 and, inevitably, a replay of the first game. If I didn't write about video games for a living, I might've given Rogue Prince of Persia a miss—and despite only just starting to get to grips with it, I'm sure glad I do write about games.
