League of Legends: A New Dawn cinematic is a thing of beauty

There are things we’d change about League of Legends but it’s not their cinematics.

Riot don’t often have call to release a cinematic trailer, they don’t exactly release sequels, expansions, or new campaigns for their one map MOBA. Instead they release cinematics whenever they damn please.

It’s good thing, too, because when they do release them they’re bloody gorgeous.

Nvidia’s Ultimate Quest contest promises to give winners “something big”

Comments3

Nvidia are ushering something in, we can’t tell what it is because there’s a big black tarpaulin over it. It could be a whole stack of Titan cards, it could be a white rhino in a tutu. Whatever the case we can’t get at it until we’ve solved their Ultimate Quest, a tweet-based text adventure. It's one of them ARGs.

Project CARS' screenshots show a storm’s coming

Comment

There are a couple of news pieces that we can’t escape repeating. Star Citizen’s made x amount of money, for instance. Or, World of Warcraft’s lost x subscribers. The one I’m happiest to write about it ‘Project CARS screenshots continue to be awesome’. Every time I write about this game I’m reminded by how damn good it looks.

I’ve never played it, and for years it’s seemed like it’s always on the cusp of release, but these are apparently all in game screens taken by players.

Those lucky bastards.

Dragon Age 3: Inquisition delayed into November

Comments1

The Dragon Age demo at E3 already had us thinking October was too far away now we have to wait a whole other month for Inquisition. “This last bit of time is about polishing the experience we want you to see,” writes executive producer Mark Darrah. “Ensuring that our open spaces are as engaging as possible. Strengthening the emotional impact of the Hero's choices. And ensuring the experience you get is the best it can be in the platform you choose to play on.”

TrainFever’s simulations have me hot under the collar

Few things stoke my coals more than a good civil management sim, SimCity, Prison Architect, and Banished have all sucked up my team recently but nothing’s scratched my municipal transport itch. That’s where TrainFever comes in.

The game kicks off in the 1840s and runs up to the modern day, letting you build networks for horse drawn carriages, steam trains, and electric overhead rails of today.

God Squad: Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris due out in December

Comment

Options are lovely. Both the brand of hot chocolate and choices. Sometimes you want to fall down cliffs and then climb back up them again while wolves chase you and men with guns shoot said guns right at your face. Other times you want to befriend ancient deities and solve puzzles with them.

So it’s rather nice that, with Lara Croft, we can enjoy both. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris was a pleasant surprise at E3 this year, and now we’ve got a release date for it. Crystal Dynamics’ second foray into the world of co-operative puzzle solving will launch on December 9th.

The nine best Kerbal Space Program mods

Comments3

Kerbal Space Program is rapidly becoming a more expansive and complex rocket simulator. The recent First Contract update added a more fully featured career mode, with currency and science and missions and reputation and explosions. But as well as Squad's own stellar work, there's also an enthusiastic community of modders constantly pumping out their own brand of features and enhancements.

New clouds, better physics, catalogues of new rocket parts. You name it, and within reason, it probably exists somewhere in the Kerbal SpacePort add-on repository. But without a guiding hand it's difficult to know where to begin. So I offer you mine. My guiding hand, that is. Take it, hold tight, and let's fly, like a cosmic Peter Pan, through the magical world of Kerbal Space Program mods.

The Humble Square Enix Bundle throws Hitman, Thief and even Anachronox at you

With the Humble 2K Bundle only just behind us, Square Enix is now getting in on the cheap games and charity action with the Humble Square Enix Bundle. Some cracking games, like Thief and the woefully under appreciated Anachronox - which is, incidentally, one of the titles in our 15 best RPGs on PC - are up for grabs.

The charities being supported by this bundle are GameAid and Make a Wish. Though I’m not sure anyone would want Daikatana, even if it is for charity.

Get back in The Room when it comes to PC on July 28th

Comment

Tactile puzzle game, The Room, is leaving Android and iOS devices this month and making its way onto PC. If, for some reason, you know nothing about one of the most successful mobile games out there, you should still be excited, because it’s great.

The Room’s central conceit is that you’re stuck in the titular room, which contains a box you must open. No, you can’t just leave and hire a locksmith. Instead, you’ve got to go through a series of lovingly crafted, tactile puzzles, leading you to fondle many a gear and fiddle with lots of locks. And come July 28th, you’ll be able to do all of that on your PC.

Tim Schafer on Double Fine publishing and not being told what to do

Comments3

Double Fine has, in the last five years, has gone through quite the transformation. The studio was treading water after Brutal Legend in 2009, but now it has complete control over its IPs, has successfully experimented with emerging business models - in many ways setting a trend - and is now assisting other developers with the Double Fine Presents label.

Speaking with Games Industry International, Tim Schafer chalked the big shift up to not liking being told what to do. And now he wants to help new indie developers chart their own course.

Designers from Epic Games, Bleszinski’s old stomping grounds; Ubisoft Montreal; and Irrational Games number among them. Between them, there’s a lot of experience in designing successful shooters, so BlueStreak is off to a strong start.

Meet IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad —the high flying return of the PC's best combat flight-sim

Comment

IL-2 Sturmovik ruled the World War Two flight-sim roost like few games ever have. Not only did it expose sim audiences to the often-overlooked Eastern Front air war, but it proved to be a gift that kept on giving: its lengthy series of expansions covered everything from early jet-fighter combat to the Pacific air war.

But from such a height came a similarly precipitous fall with the with the disastrous (and awkwardly-named) IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover, an ill-fated take on the Battle of Britain that led to the departure of series creator Oleg Maddox and a terrible, buggy release that left many fans feeling burned.

Now, with IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad and a new development team, 1C are trying to get the king of WW2 aviation back in the air.

Beyond Civilization: Discovering Firaxis

By Adam Smith on July 23rd, 2014 at 9:00 pm.

While visiting Firaxis to play Civilization: Beyond Earth, I spent a couple of hours talking to members of the team and learning how the company works. As the current creators and curators of two of my favourite series of games, Firaxis rank among the most interesting studios in existence, and their history is also a large part of the history of PC strategy gaming. With one eye on the future and the other on the past, here are extended thougts on the utilitarian nature of Civilization, the role of Sid Meier and much much more.

Dramagame Technology: Velvet Sundown

By Adam Smith on July 24th, 2014 at 8:00 am.

As soon as I read the press release, it was inevitable that I would be spending time inside Velvet Sundown‘s ‘roleplaying game’/'social experiment’. It is the first in the ‘brand new genre of Dramagame‘ and I want to be one of the first actors in that genre. Sadly, I’m far too busy to dive in right now but the game is available, for free, on Steam. Set on board a luxury yacht, it’s a roleplaying game in all of the ways that The Crew isn’t. No action sequences, no power-ups, no collectibles – just a group of players attempting to perform the roles they are assigned. Like Spy Party, except up close and personal, and therefore open to all manner of immersion-shattering behaviour.

Conspiracies Galore: Episodic RPG Majestic Nights

By Alice O'Connor on July 24th, 2014 at 9:00 am.

Conspiracy theories are fanfic for reality, aren’t they? That particular sort which knows how stories should really have gone. They pack history with exciting twists and turns, jazzing up origin stories with alien intervention, adding excitement and danger to even aeroplane vapour trails, splashing in sexy murders all over the place, and revealing that beloved characters are actually lizard people.

They are all, of course, entirely true. Majestic Nights knows this too. It’s a period RPG set during the ’80s, with two playable characters tangled up in the deepest, darkest conspiracies. Though I suspect it’ll ‘conveniently’ leave out the lizard people.

Sounds Familiar: Doom 2 In Name Only

By Alice O'Connor on July 24th, 2014 at 10:00 am.

“Imagine a world where Doom II was never released, and the levels never saw the light of day. The only bit of information that ever saw the light of day were the titles of the 32 maps, cryptic as can be. What kind of map would ‘The Crusher’ be, or ‘O of Destruction,’ who knows?”

That beautiful thought from Liz Ryerson (who Cara recently embedded with) sparked Doom 2 In Name Only, a community project where members of the Doomworld forums reimagined Doom II’s campaign based purely on its level names. D2INO was released in June, 666 days after starting. It’s worth waiting for a number like that to roll around when dabbling in Doom (‘cos Satans etc).

GOG Now Supports Linux

By Alice O'Connor on July 24th, 2014 at 1:00 pm.

“The year of the Linux desktop” is a phrase people have tossed around with increasing irony since the nineties, but it was never going to arrive explosively. Linux has slowly grown and spread into homes through friendly distributions like Ubuntu and Mint, installed as easy and safer alternatives to Windows or to freshen up old duffers (my netbook is Minty fresh now). Games have followed.

Steam and Humble Bundles have helped urge devs to make Linux versions, and now GOG are in on it. The virtuous virtual vendor of vintage (and virgin) video games launched Linux support today, starting with 50-odd games new and old. It’s the first official Linux store release for some. And loads of them are on sale too.

Well-thumbed: the Steam Controller has grown an analog stick

Comments1

The Steam Controller, as it was first pitched to us, was a totally alien way to play a game. Two flat radar dishes, resembling the subwoofers in the back of a an 18-year-old’s car, represented the promise of mouse-controlled games on the couch. A touch screen at its centre stood in quiet tribute to the Dreamcast. Possibly.

Nowadays it looks much more familiar. Four Xbox port-friendly letters sit below the Steam Controller's pause button, and a thumbstick - a new addition - in place of the last prototype’s d-pad.

Chat restrictions increase win rates for a "large number" of League of Legends players

Comments1

Riot Games have loud ways of dealing with the very worst players in one of the best free PC games around, League of Legends - like the tribunal, and the head-on-a-spike reports that follow their rulings.

But one of the quieter tools in their arsenal is the temporary chat ban. Not only does it dissuade players from bad behaviour, say Riot, but it actually tends to improve their performance in the lanes.

Star Wars: The Old Republic preps for largest story expansion since Rise of the Hutt Cartel

Comment

In retrospect, overarching MMO plotlines can sound like supervillain whack-a-mole. The Galactic Republic and Sith Empire might be at war, but together they’ve bopped the Hutt Cartel’s invasion of Makeb on the head, and given the Dread Masters of Oricon a good malleting.

For now, though, Star Wars: The Old Republic’s next major storyline is swathed in mystery, preceded by two new flashpoints that make up its prelude. It might be time to take another look at Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Respawn to introduce in-game 'black market' currency to Titanfall in Game Update 5

Comment

Respawn are currently turning the Titanfall community on to the idea of ‘black market’ currency, which is a funny thing to call an developer-designed point system. Talk to Blizzard: they’ll tell you all about real black markets.

In any case, players will soon be able to earn in-game cash by completing challenges or selling on unloved burn cards. But don’t call it a microtransaction system: there’ll be no means of acquiring ‘black market’ money with real-life debit cards.

Obsidian hope Pillars of Eternity sales will fund its sequel without Kickstarter

Kickstarter funded Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera from InXile, and Pillars of Eternity and its expansion pack from Obsidian - essentially plotting out the second Infinity Engine Age in advance.

For Obsidian, the hope is that initial kick will be enough to see them through Eternity’s sequel, too.

“That’s the dream of any independent developer,” said project director Josh Sawyer. “That they get the cash reserves that they don't need to ask anybody for money.”

Cliff Harris on Gratuitous Space Battles 2: it's a "whole new world"

Comment

Gratuitous Space Battles 2, sequel to 2009’s excellent game of building ships and watching them blow each other up in simulated space battles, has been in development over at Positech Games since last year. The original was a great deal of fun, mixing modular ship design with tower defence-like mechanics. Cliff Harris has been posting regular updates on his blog and in the GSB forums, but today marks the official announcement of the game.

It’s on its way, probably this year. It will be playable at Eurogamer 2014, but that’s not until September. I’m impatient, so I got in touch with Cliff to get the skinny on his latest game.

What to expect from The Elder Scrolls Online's daedra-controlled Imperial City

Comment

The Elder Scrolls Online is still a young whippersnapper - and you can see what our Nick thought about it in his Elder Scrolls Online review - but ZeniMax Online are already thinking about the future. At QuakeCon, the team held a panel teasing the audience with what’s to come for the fantasy MMO.

One of the big things is the centre of the titanic PvP war that’s consumed the Imperial province of Cyrodiil. At the heart of the region sits the Imperial City - that place you probably spent a lot of time in while playing Oblivion - and the for the time being, it’s impenetrable. But that will change.

Gear Up hits beta: put guns on goo or make invisible spider tanks

The Unreal Tournament Development Team have put together a concept map for the upcoming Unreal engine 4 shooter. It’s the first map they’ve shown, but it’s very much a proof of concept rather than a proper level.

Art director Chris Perna does a fly through of the map, noting that he went for a sci-fi industrial look, but this isn’t representative of the entire game. “We could go grimier with this, but when we talk about visual clarity and things like that, I think this kind of thing hits that mark.”

Some thoughts on Kerbal Space Program: First Contract

Comment

Everybody loves space. All those planets and black holes whizzing around, orbitting things and getting into scrapes. All the tinfoil spaceships we've sent out to look for interstellar treasure. Those screaming cats and dogs we were sending up in rockets for a while. They must have been especially excited about the wonders of the universe. Yes, it's round the clock, cosmic fun wherever space is concerned, and videogames are certainly no exception.

The indelible Kerbal Space Program is one such space videogame. It recently received its huge First Contract update, which is not only a tremendous pun but a comprehensive overhaul of the game's fledgling career mode and an update that's been years in the making. What was once a sandbox free-for-all ship builder is now a sort of aerospace tycoon game in which you take on government and private contracts in order to raise cash and progress along a branching tech tree. I've been playing it. Here's what I think so far.
