Here are the many changes Riot have planned for League of Legends' Summoner's Rift

Comments1

The Summoner’s Rift sees most of what goes on in the lanes in League of Legends. So how does one go about updating such a crucial map? Subtly, but decisively, it turns out.

“We want Summoner’s Rift to be the place we play together for years to come,” say Riot. “For this update, we’ve chosen a handcrafted art style that we think will grow and evolve over time, just like the rest of the game.”

Battlefield Hardline team pledge "great stability" for launch

Comments3

Poor Visceral. They’ve inherited the Battlefield series at a time when its reputation has never been iffier. Battlefield 4’s launch was scuppered by server crashes, netcode problems, and low walls which occasionally killed vaulting players at random.

Now, with the world and their paymasters at EA watching, they’ve got to get Hardline off the pad without any of its engines exploding. But they’re a confident bunch.

Star Citizen stretch goals see funding top $47m as community votes for them to continue

Comments5

Star Citizen’s Kickstarter campaign may have ended in November 2012, but its crowdfunding push never did. Kickstarter's original $2.1 million total now constitutes less than 5% of the frankly absurd $47m raised to fund the game’s development. Yet even as Chris Roberts raises concerns that developers Cloud Imperium will run out of meaningful ways to expand the eventual game, the Star Citizen community have voted for the stretch goals to keep coming.

David Braben prefers playing Elite: Dangerous with the Oculus Rift

Comments4

Countless developers have recognised a creative and commercial opportunity in the Oculus Rift - but how many don the goggles when they get home?

Frontier’s David Braben is one. He doesn’t get motion sick, and plays Elite: Dangerous with a 5.1 speaker set-up rather than headphones, because that way the sound rotates with your ship rather than “with your head”.

“It does make a difference because you can hear the engines behind you and the guns going off,” he told PCGamesN. “You can hear yourself being hit right across the canopy. It’s that sort of level of immersion which does make a difference.”

That said, he isn’t sure the Rift is a mass market device.

Inside Slitherine: the wargame publisher searching for new realms to conquer

Comment

If you conjure up the image of a CEO, you’d be hard pressed to fit JD McNeil into that mold. As the CEO of Slitherine, he oversees the 120 developers under Slitherine’s wing. His knowledge of the wargame genre is great, and he knows exactly how popular it is and how well each game does - not that he’d share exact numbers with a journalist, even after a few beers.

Beneath the jokes, though, he’s a shrewd businessman who has seen Slitherine go from strength to strength, and somehow he finds the time to be a magistrate in England. Maybe that’s why he’s able to listen to me jabbering on about Twitch - something Slitherine is only just exploring. He listens and analyses, looking to grow the publisher in ways that makes sense.

I can’t shake my skepticism about Evolve.

It kills me to say that. I adored developer Turtle Rock’s Left 4 Dead games, and I love the concept of an asymmetric multiplayer FPS. Steam Early Access is confusing but worthwhile, says Mercenary Kings studio

Andy Chalk at 06:38 on 25 June 2014

Steam Early Access can be confusing. Not because there's anything inherently wrong with the system—that's a debate for another time and place—but because everyone has different expectations, and the potential for disappointment is high. Yet Jean-Francois Major of Tribute Games, the developer of Mercenary Kings, says that despite the many difficulties involved with the process, it's a net positive in the long run.

How the internet tried to rig the Steam Summer Adventure, and how Valve is trying to stop them

Evan Lahti at 07:17 on 25 June 2014

A few days ago, members of the Steam community schemed to rig the Steam Summer Adventure competition, a metagame running in parallel with Valve’s 12-day Summer Sale. Surprisingly, it wasn’t a malicious plan, but a kind of alliance meant to bring equal victory to everyone on Steam. As intended, Team Pink won Sunday. Blue won Monday. Purple will win next, if things go smoothly. On Wednesday, a Red victory is scheduled, then Green.

Is a small collective actually having this big of an influence on a Steam-wide, public competition? Valve has already amended the contest to encourage more competition. I took a look at the evidence and spoke to a few of the people caught up in the dark business of virtual trading card market-manipulation.

Why the new consoles are good for The Division on PC

Comments1

You’re only as strong as the weakest platform you’re supporting, and PC gamers have got used to developers making concessions for the consoles. But Far Cry 4 is likely the last major Ubisoft game to pull the Xbox 360 and PS3 along with it: 2015 and beyond belongs to only the most powerful machines.

That’s great news for The Division especially. Ubisoft Massive are PC developers in their bones - and when they saw how the new consoles worked, they leapt for joy.

Rust is rebooting: here's why

Comment

Rust, Facepunch Studios' Darwinian survival game, is getting a do-over; a reboot that’s making sweeping changes across Rust’s savage world. The default branch on Steam is no longer being updated, and Garry Newman and the rest of Facepunch are working exclusively on the experimental branch.

Garry calls the original Rust a prototype, and a messy one at that. The code is limiting, and with the amount of players - a number that surprised the developers - Garry felt that the team needed to pick up the pace and overhaul the game instead of polishing it as they went along.

It sounds like a significant undertaking, rebuilding the game from scratch. I got in touch with Garry to find out about the extent of the changes and how the old code was holding the game back.

Kingdoms Age: even strategy games are dabbling in VR

What if Civilization had a baby with Total War, the PR from MMORTS Kingdoms Age asked me. What if, indeed. Agincourt Gaming reckons that Kingdoms Age would be the result of this unholy union.

I’m not at all sure where Civilization is in this union, though. It’s got the real-time battles of Total War, and the management stuff of Total War. The implication is, I suppose, that it will be deeper than the campaign map found in the likes of Rome 2. Since it’s not very deep at all. None of that's what's notable, though. It also offers a persistent, online world and incorporates VR... which is unexpected.

Also, it's quite extrange that Activision has gone to a quality studio to develop a game of a licensed IP. All what the publishers usually do with those games is hire the cheapest studio available, or that's the impression it gives. What's going on here?

What you never wondered how a studio that produces so many flops keeps getting work in today's market? I will give you a clue it's not because they charge a premium for their services. And Activision actually developed a lot of their licensed games inhouse but with most of their studios working on CoD or Skylanders and the others tied up with Spiderman and Transformers I guess it made sense to outsource this. And for a 3rd person action game their choices are really Platinum Games or Ninja Theory.

In Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, an experiment has gone awry. Valve introduced the fully-automatic CZ75-Auto in February as an inexpensive alternative to the ubiquitous P250 pistol. But now the spider has swallowed the fly whole, and the CZ75a is everywhere.

Obsidian break down Pillars of Eternity's frontline: the warrior and the barbarian

Comment

Obsidian’s plan for their frontline classes sounds a lot like their goal for Pillars of Eternity as a whole: they want to capture the spirit of their ‘90s Infinity Engine predecessors, but introduce some new and far-reaching elements for players to tinker with.

Yesterday they introduced two of Eternity’s primary tanks: the warrior and the barbarian. In Baldur’s Gate, these were the least complex - and arguably least interesting - classes to play with. But project director Josh Sawyer reckons their particulars are unusual enough for us to get tactically wrapped up in.

One of my favorite genres, and a chance to revisit its greatest recent hits? The only problem was going to be keeping the list to just ten or fifteen items!

Or so I thought. Two days later, my list was a shambles. Somehow, in the last few years, most of my favorite racing games were rendered obsolete. Not by operating system compatibility or changing graphics standards. No, what had killed my racing game collection was Games For Windows, SecuROM, and server shutdowns.

The big redesign of World of Warcraft’s old character models has finally hit the humans, or at least the male of the species. Now he looks, if not human, at least more expressive and detailed. Less like a sex doll and more like a shaved gorilla.

500 Years In The Making: Chess 2 Coming To PC

By Alice O'Connor on June 26th, 2014 at 8:00 pm.

Chess is a pretty good game, I hear, but I’m not really into retro gaming. After literally centuries (not to mention countless mods and patches) someone has finally made a proper sequel, so I might give it a crack. While the original Chess only had one faction, Chess 2: The Sequel adds another five armies with different rules, along with duels and a new victory condition.

It’s still kind of retro though, not upgrading the graphics at all. The story’s pretty much that same old war tale, though now it does now include ghosts, tigers, and elephants. A bit Far Cry 3-ish, then.

Behold The Clockface: Timespinner

By Adam Smith on June 26th, 2014 at 4:00 pm.

Timespinner’s graphics, time-hopping storyline and general ambience remind me of Chrono Trigger, which is one of the few JRPGs I’ve ever found the patience to complete. Lunar Ray Games’ project is no JRPG though. Currently on Kickstarter (I have a macro for that phrase), it’s a “2D Metroidvania Platformer for PC, Mac OS X, and Linux”, which provides me with the perfect opportunity to introduce the irritating term ChronoVania. The ‘V’ must be capitalised.

It’s a delightful looking game, using the time travel device to introduce a variety of environments filled with robotic enemies that pursue lead character Lunais through history. The team, led by Bodie Lee (formerly of Bungie), are seeking $50,000 and have already raised over $10,000 after a day of crowdfunding.

Control Dwarf Fortress With Isometric Graphics And Mouse

By Graham Smith on June 26th, 2014 at 2:00 pm.

Dwarf Fortress is not as hard to play as you think it is, but there’s no denying that its ASCII graphics lack modern clarity. Chances are that if you’ve played the game any time in the last two years, you did so not using a vanilla install, but by partnering the complicated fantasy simulation with third-party tools like DwarfTherapist or Stonesense.

As of earlier this week, Stonesense just became a lot more powerful. It previously let you visualise your world with isometric sprite graphics in a separate piece of software, but now that angled art can be integrated directly in the game itself. Best of all, it can be used not just as a visualiser but as an interface to control part of the game.

TerraTech: Build A Tank, Kill Other Tanks

By Ben Barrett on June 26th, 2014 at 9:00 am.

TerraTech is near the top of the list of games that I saw at Rezzed 2014, thought were amazing and then failed utterly to tell anyone about. It’s an even split between resource gatherer and combat game, where you’re an intrepid colonist working for a mega-corporation on a new world. Beyond that it laughingly discards any notions of reality. Putting a vehicle together is simple Lego stuff, clicking parts together until you have something vaguely stable. It can be done at any time with the tap of a button and manages to dodge any fiddliness you might expect. The game’s up on Kickstarter now, there’s a demo and you can check out some more hot facts below.
