Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth will propel the development of human civilization beyond the traditional timeline of a Civilization game, by exploring humanity’s future on an alien world. For the first time, players will lead factions divided by contrasting cultures and evolve their new civilizations to reflect their chosen destiny. Players will experience an array of new gameplay possibilities, including nonlinear technological progression, deeper customization of chosen factions, and an entire alien world that will change the very identity of each faction based on their choices.

• Seed the Adventure: Players will establish a cultural identity, select a leader and sponsor an expedition by assembling the spacecraft, cargo and colonists through a series of choices that directly impact starting conditions when arriving on the new alien planet.

• Alien World: Exploring the benefits and dangers of a new planet filled with dangerous terrain, mystical resources and hostile lifeforms unlike those of Earth, players will build outposts, unearth ancient alien relics, tame new forms of life, develop flourishing cities and establish trade routes to create prosperity for their people.

• New Technology Web: Reflecting forward progress in an uncertain future, technology advancement will occur through a series of nonlinear choices that affect the development of mankind. The tech web is organized around three broad themes, each with a distinct victory condition.

• New Quest System: Quests are infused with fiction about the planet, and will help guide players through a series of side missions that will aid in the collection of resources, upgrading units, and advancing through the game.

• New Orbital Layer: Players will build and deploy advanced military, economic and scientific satellites that provide strategic offensive, defensive and support capabilities from orbit.

“Having celebrated its 23rd anniversary last year, Civilization has cemented its reputation as one of the greatest and longest running franchises in video game history,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth builds upon that success by pushing the series in new directions with players exploring an unknown future on an alien planet.”

“The Civ team was excited about the opportunity to continue the story of Civilization into the future, because it allows the team to break free of historical context,” said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games. “We’ve always let our fans create the history of mankind, and Civilization: Beyond Earth will now let them create the future.”
In addition to its use of DirectX 11, Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth will be among the first wave of products optimized for the latest in AMD graphics technologies, including: the new Mantle graphics API, for enhanced graphics performance; AMD CrossFire™, for UltraHD resolutions and extreme image quality; and AMD Eyefinity, which allows for a panoramic gameplay experience on up to six different HD displays off of a single graphics card.

Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth is not yet rated by the ESRB, and will be available for Windows PC, Mac and Linux in North America this fall for $49.99. Take a look at some of the debut screen shots below. If you're interested in finding out more, you can head over to its official Civilization website right here.

I was hoping that given the focus on effeciency Nvida would do another Kepler launch where the 680 used less power, performed better and launched at the same price as the 580. However it seems like they have bumped up the price and are pricing it against the 780 Ti instead of the 780. Which will probably mean the lower tier cards will follow suite, meaning the 870 will no doubt be pushed way out of my price range.

Yeah, I was too hoping that power would go down aswell, but given the nº of transistors it will have (according to that rumor, let's not forget that), I see why it is what it is. After all, and using the numbers from the Anandtech's review, the 680 had 3.5B transistors and was rated at 195W, compared to the 3B transistors and 244W of the 580, but that 880 will have 7.9B! That's more than twice.

Given that it has more transistors, it is clocked higher and has more memory that also runs faster than a 780Ti, it is impressive that it uses 20W less power.

As for the 870... well maybe we (I need an upgrade too) will be able to grab a 780/780Ti for cheap as everybody will jump to the newer cards. That or go AMD...

I am really tempted to pick up a r290 with a non stock cooler, but The Witcher 3, Batman: Arkham Knight and a few others being a Nvidia games (plus DX12 and Nvidia's new driver updates looking to mitigate the advantage of mantle) holds me back. I doubt that many will be dumping 780/780Ti level cards if the rumours of the 880 are accurate TBH. It just doesn't seem to be that big of a leap for most people with those cards to jump. Maybe once Nvidia rolls out the big guns next year. Plus I really would prefer a cooler less power hungry card than those monsters.

From the sound of things yeilds on high performance 20nm wafers will mean Maxwell will be late this year anyway.

I'm just gonna wait for an 890....... whenever that decides to come out, and completely upgrade my platform when pascalx2 card comes out.

Wow I really didnt know that 8x and 4x had no difference at all, im actually just going to start doing 4x now lol thanks a lot for that! Yea hopefully they can optimize the game alot more

There is definitley a difference between 4x and 8x MSAA.

Its not massive though so for many people it may be better to stick with 4x as the cost is pretty big for not a huge improvement.

Beyond Earth, I honestly can't wait.
Alpha Centauri is one of the *greatest* games of all time and having Beyond Earth borrow heavily from that has made me giggity.

Historic Battlefield games are relocating from GameSpy to Origin

Comments1

The Battlefield games have a strong history on PC, with massive victories that pre-date the Battlefield 4 launch fiasco by over a decade. Such fondly remembered games are not just memories though; the likes of Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 still have dedicated players, still waging war on the less detailed but no less destructive fields of yesteryear.

The announcement that GameSpy will shut its doors at the end of May has potentially upset some of these online soliders, as the older Battlefield games require the service to run. But never fear, EA is here! And they plan to relocate all their Battlefield services safe and sound in Origin.

Win The Space Race: The Last Federation’s Out Soon

By Craig Pearson on April 12th, 2014 at 2:00 pm.

It’s been interesting watching post-AI War Arcen at work. Their idiosyncratic drunken approach to genres has always resulted in games worth talking about. Granted, some of those words might not be all that complimentary, but they’ve never once released a game that had any hint of hubris. Not even when they return to the space strategy genre that pays the bills. The Last Federation’s a “strategy/tactics game set inside a simulation game,” which sets it apart from AI War’s ridiculous spectacle of death. It displays the one thing that’s true of Arcen’s game: it was announced in January, and it’s coming out next week.

Xcommunication: There Came An Echo Trailer

By Craig Pearson on April 12th, 2014 at 10:00 am.

There Came An Echo has geek credentials coming out of it’s face hole–Wil Wheaton and Ashly Burch are on board as voice actors–but I’m not all that bothered by the cast. Not when my voice is the real star. It’s a voice controlled squad strategy game where you’re shouting down orders to your team. Initially controlling a single player unused to the violence that’s being asked of him, you’ll talk him through each step required to turn a cryptographer into a corpse-maker. Follow my voice to the trailer…

City Car Driving Is As Much About Roleplay As DayZ

By Graham Smith on April 11th, 2014 at 7:00 pm.

I am in my car and I am slowly learning how to drive. I’ve put my seatbelt on, started my engine, turned on the lights, set the wipers wiping, slipped into first gear and pulled smoothly into traffic. Naturally, my instructor dryly points out that I’ve forgotten to indicate.

Pulling up at the first set of traffic lights, I lean forward and peer into the night beyond the rain-streaked windscreen. The traffic is bad tonight. I use the spare moment to take a drink of beer. My instructor – Russian simulator City Car Driving – says nothing, but drinking while driving still feels wrong. I put the beer back down on my desk, push down on the parking brake and continue my journey into the night.

World of Tanks will even the playing field for 2014

Comment

World of Tanks has come a long way since its inception, but 2014 looks to be quite a game-changer for the free-to-play game. Wargaming is developing some notable improvements to the game, with a great focus on wrestling away the dominance the big clans have on the game, and evening the playing field so smaller, less experienced clans can still have fun without inevitable defeats.

New game modes are the way forward for Wargaming’s plan, and a whole host of new abilities that means your tank isn’t the only thing to rely on in battle.

Their new time: 20 minutes and 41 seconds. That’s nine minutes faster than the previous record. Nine.

Here's Watch Dogs running on an Ultra spec PC - and the hardware you'll need to do the same

Comment

Watch Dogs’ most recent trailer was recorded on a rig rocking an Intel Core i7-3930K and a GeForce Titan. It could hardly be more unattainable if the GPU was cooled using a steady supply of dragon’s blood, or if its disc drive read DVDs via a diamond needle.

You needn’t own the most powerful graphics card in existence to run Watch Dogs on ‘Ultra’, though - merely something in that ballpark.

Procedurally-generated stealth and survival romp, Sir, You Are Being Hunted is getting close to a major milestone: v1.0. Come May 1st, the game will escape the shackles of the 0.Xs, and that’s not far away at all.

Just a dash over two weeks, and you’ll be able to sneak around moors, industrial towns and woods while being hunted by gentlemen robots and metallic poachers. Of course, you could be doing that right now, as it’s been in Early Access for a while.

World of Darkness MMO gets a stake driven through its heart

Put away your bloodsucking dentures, because as of today, CCP’s World of Darkness MMO is no more. CCP’s Atlanta studio has been hit hard by the cancellation, with 56 employees losing their jobs. Some have been offered positions in other parts of the company, while the remaining staff will focus on developing games in the EVE universe.

“The decision to end the World of Darkness MMO project is one of the hardest I’ve ever had to make,” said CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson. “I have always loved and valued the idea of a sandbox experience set in that universe, and over the years I’ve watched the team passionately strive to make that possible.”

Subnautica screenshots rise up out of the depths

Comments1

I went snorkeling once, in Australia. I was scared I’d be eaten by a shark, but that fear soon revealed itself to be silly when compared to the real dangers of the sea. When I surfaced and swam back to our gently bobbing platform, I watched as a man tried to stem the blood pouring out of his leg. He’d brushed up against the reef and now had a big hole where flesh should be.

So it is with nervous, almost fearful anticipation that Iap up these Subnautica screenshots. Unknown World’s new game - in a new genre, they say - is all about exploring alien, underwater realms. They are places to build in, navigate through and encounter life within. They are also strikingly pretty.

The Elder Scrolls Online fansite creates a trading system because ZeniMax Online won't

Comments2

ZeniMax Online decided not to create an auction house or any serious trading system into The Elder Scrolls Online. I’d say commerce in TESO is very Dark Ages, but the early medieval era actually had markets, traders and some form of organisation.

So it’s come down to players creating a system. A marketplace that doesn’t exist in-game, but in the TESO Elite fansite, devised by players. The official TESO Twitter account has endorsed the system, probably so the developers can get back to squashing all the bugs that have been plaguing the game since launch. It's an odd endorsement, though, as ZeniMax previously defended its no auction house stance by saying such things ruin game economies and trivialise getting good gear.

Why X-COM creator Julian Gollop left handheld gaming behind and came back to the PC

Comment

Before the (hopefully) imminently Kickstarted Chaos Reborn, X-Com creator Julian Gollop hadn’t made a PC game in over a decade. As an independent developer and as a producer at Ubisoft Sofia, he’d made games mainly for Nintendo handhelds - the platforms which for some time he considered the “last refuge” of turn-based strategy.

But now he’s back, building a PC-first tactics game. Something - a couple of things, actually - changed his mind.

Back when Dawn of War was the only real prospect of PC gaming in a war-only future, we used to moan. We used to hanker after the one-to-one adaptations of Games Workshop’s more accomplished tabletop games they weren’t commissioning.

Well: be careful what you wish for. Space Hulk happened, and it wasn’t so hot. Cyanide’s Blood Bowl had a buggy beginning, but fared better - by the time of its Legendary Edition, it’d built up a committed amateur league following.

With Blood Bowl 2, Cyanide plan to deliver on that initial promise that kept players fighting through the bugs with a more accessible, feature-heavier revision of the formula. Here’s what it looks like.

Deus Next: Technolust Is Cyberpunk VR

By Nathan Grayson on April 15th, 2014 at 11:00 am.

“Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo,” lamented Juliet’s disembodied cyber-spine from her mechanized gelatinous vat while wistfully tearing the arms from a cleaning droid the way one might pick petals from a flower. That is what the name Technolust makes me think of. The game is not at all about that, but it is about as cyberpunk as cyberpunk gets. It’s got monolithic, neon-glistening structures, drone-eclipsed skies, and copious references to the likes of Blade Runner and Neuromancer. The twist? It’s a made-for-VR experience, and it looks mighty attractive despite its somewhat generic leanings.

Spitfire Spit Take: Cult Of The Wind Has Human Dogfights

If you can look beyond their booger-noses and barely masked sociopathy, children make excellent game designers. They do this stuff for free all the time, just to amuse themselves. Every weekend is crunch time. Developers North of Earth are wise to look to them for inspiration, making a multiplayer shooter about human dogfights. “In Cult of the Wind, players compete and cooperate in ritualistic multi-player human dogfights, complete with imaginary weapons, pretend explosions, and airplane noises made with their mouths.” It looks delightful, it’s on Greenlight, and there’s a trailer below.

Found: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Lost Alpha Mod Coming This Month

By Alice O'Connor on April 15th, 2014 at 8:00 am.

Like old Stalker tales told around the campfire, a lot of strange and wonderful things were once said to be in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, from naked green dwarves to driveable vehicles and a whole extra city. Several mods have restored various bits of cut content, based on leftover files and leaked dev builds, but Lost Alpha is one of the more ambitious. What began as a project to remake and reintegrate these leftovers has blown up into a new parallel story which includes (new) old content and a bits of the creators’ own design too.

In response to some ruffian leaking a scrappy old build from November, developers Dezowave Group have decided to release Lost Alpha earlier than planned then keep working on it. It’ll arrive on April 26, the 28th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster which started all this.
