Forums - Gaming - The End is Near: Google building a gaming console

http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/27/wsj-google-android-game-console/

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google might make another foray into living room hardware as it's currently developing an Android powered gaming console. Since that's just not enough of a rumor bomb, the talkative "people familiar with the matter" also claim a wristwatch and followup to its "postponed" Nexus Q project are on the way. If you believe the rumors, its reason for jumping into all these categories is to beat products Apple is reportedly developing in the same categories, with at least one of them launching this fall. Finally, the leaks indicate Google's next major Android update will be "tailored to low-cost devices in developing countries," and are ready to go in a much wider variety of devices.

That could mean laptops or even appliances running the rumored Key Lime Pie flavor of Android, built by manufacturers like Samsung which is already working on a watch of its own. Also mentioned is HP, which the report goes on to claim is building laptops that run Android. Companies like Ouya, Mad Catz, Pebble and GEAK probably think Mountain View is already late to the party, but official OS-level support and heavily marketed hardware could take these segments to the next level.

We all know Google doesn't mess around. There will be no game resale or even retail disk with Google... Just good old DD. Console price will be low and subsidized and advertising will fund everything. Console should be plenty powerful as Android can run on Intel or ARM and Snapdragon 800 already is pretty powerful SoC.

Is this going to change gaming as we know it?

We lost guys. The end is near... enjoy your last moments with your console of preference. I am officially retired... XD.

Now seriously I hope they don't pose a threat...

while i am not against google entering the console market, on the contrary it would be very interesting and i would keep on eye out for what ever they make, but i will say that if they try go head to head with sony/ms/nintendo they will be crushed. exclusives matter VERY much and simply google doesnt have that. they need the big system sellers as well. CoD, GTA and those games.

they also need something to make them stand out. The halo, gran turismo or mario. and those are VERY hard to create. also you seem microsoft and sony going all out with the PS4 and X1. 15 exclusives for X1 and 20 for PS4 in the first year. these people arent fucking around, it will be near impossible to compete with these companies

Android for PC? Count me in, i'd love to ditch windows.

Saw Android powered and immediately got disappointed, hopefully it'll run a custom version of Android that will make the games exclusive to the device, and make it to where you can stream the games to mobile devices from that device....only then will it sell.

With no real reason to have the "console" it'll just be another Ouya...

Well I wouldn't say near, maybe third party AAA titles if Android games begin to appeal to a massive market. The Ouya ...maybe.

Don’t follow the hype, follow the games

Here a little quote I want for those to keep memorize in your head for this coming next gen.

Count me out.

This is good for us. The best Google and Apple will have are gaming apps from Android and iOS on whatever TV platform they push. It will mostly pull in the very casual, causing MS and Sony to head towards the core, and will switch focus from Kinect/Move and TV towards games. It will push them into the niche we want them in.

A console launching in two years from now that would out preform the XB1 and PS4. It would be competitively priced and have Google backing it would be dangerous.

Dont say things like that!!!

Also, an android powered console? Wealready have one!

If it can match the Xbone and PS Quadruple in power, features and games, I'm all for it. But if it's just a Google branded OUYA that plays cheap mobile games on the big screen, count me well out.
